ReStructure Mix Update (11/30/17) "Body Language” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Joel Diamond Experience

ReStructure Mix Update (11/30/17) "Body Language” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Joel Diamond Experience

Joel Diamond Experience is a project from the man himself who helped to bring the sophisticated production to the dance floor. There is a fine resonance of American Music history in his music along with the non-stop party feel of disco. “Body Language” is from his 1979 project Joel Diamond Experience, which is the finale of full flavored disco magic in the US. This track features the mighty Jocelyn Brown (credited as Jocelyn Shaw) on lead vocals and the performance brings this disco number to a powerful level. It is a hidden gem on the album where I always dreamed of a nice 12” version to frame Jocelyn and Joel’s genius.

I have taken the album version of “Body Language” and moved the arrangement into several breakdowns along with new percussion. It is a ReStructure Mix to pay homage to the last breaths of the disco market placing some memorable and exciting pieces to remember the great rein of disco music in its place.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/27/17) "Trans Eurpoa Express” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk is an electronic machine making sounds and rhythm work together in a new genre of both composition and influence. Their sounds have moved throughout the early 70s and to current as an outline for synthesizers and experimental modes. “Trans Europa Express” is from the album by the same titled released in 1977. It is obvious that the approach was not only a challenge for a new audience for the time but also an obvious reflection of music to come.

I have taken the album version of “Trans Europa Express” and re-electrified a ReStructure Mix to pay tribute to Kraftwerk and their genius. A movement in music and the dance genre which continues to reflect itself in dance history and current trends.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/26/17) "When The Rain Begins To Fall” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora

The 80s were a time of pop anthems in both rock and dance music. One of the most dramatic of which was formed with Jermaine Jackson and celebrity singer Pia Zadora – “When The Rain Begins To Fall” – produced by Jack White who also gave us Laura Branigan’s “Gloria”. This one is a video number that is played out like an adventure in a desert land where two lovers are destined to overcome all obstacles to be together. With Jermaine’s yearning and Pia’s sultry delivery this one powers more drama with a thumping electronic soundtrack. It is the 80s dance scene on fire.

I have taken the 12” remix version and reapplied this play into a ReStructure Mix with more high energy riffs and segments to play out with more exaggerated emotion. Thunder claps and rolling sequencers make this remix a stage powerhouse. The duet has not lost its stars – Pia and Jermaine are clinging to each other throughout this number still.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/25/17) "Sentimental Lover” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Milou

Milou (Michaela Schultz) is a German singer who released several synth-pop dance single from the late 80s and early 90s. This pulsating style of German pop was labeled “Asian New Wave” in the late 80s. The heavy bass synthesizers and melodic vocals were a factor in these tracks and many artists like Milou helped to keep the dance beat pounding throughout this period. “Sentimental Lover” is from 1987 and is a dreamy love song that flows in beautiful way. This one always fit into an afterhours set or early morning program.

I have taken the 12” German release using the vocal and pieces of the instrumental to layer the effective riffs into a new arrangement for this ReStructure Mix. It will fit into the Italo-disco feel of the time also – however I have always identified the deeper bass and heavy beats as its own genre much like Modern Talking.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/24/17) "Bon Bon Vie” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – T.S. Monk

T.S. Monk is funk band lead by Thelonius Sphere Monk, III and released their first project titled “House Of Music” in 1980. The project was produced by the legendary Sandy Linzer who also gave us Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, Odyssey, Cory Daye and Teresa. “Bon Bon Vie” is a single from the album that is slick and plays out as one of the remnants of the funk and disco era of the late 70s. A big band sound is injected as a level of nuance from Linzer’s production. This one is the early 80s again in transition and fills that funky space which took dance floors into another chapter of dance music.

I have taken the album version of “Bon Bon Vie” and recreated a funkier ReStructure Mix with more of the breaks and riff discoveries that make this one so irresistible. An homage to that early 80s period and finding the funk all over again in a new way.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/23/17) "Caught In The Act” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Earlene Bentley

Earlene Bentley brought the dance floor to its knees in 1983 with her high energy hit “The Boys Come To Town” which was produced by the iconic team of Ian Levine and Fiachra Trench. This was the big period where disco music was being reborn again in a new genre called high energy. Lots of percussion and heavy beats were the formula and not a shy use of the disco elements that made dance floors feel free. The productions were electronic but not less symphonic. The voices used in this new formula were powerful divas with a roaring edge to their delivery. Earlene Bentley always took hold of the energy and made it her own and it is no exception here in “Caught In The Act” from 1984 when she finds her lover in an expose.

I have taken the vocal and dub from the Record Shack 12” and discovered a new situation for “Caught In The Act”. Many of the keyboard hooks are the high energy pieces we all grew to love and move to. Here they are spaced apart and used sparingly to lay down a whole new piece for high energy fans.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/21/17) "Remone” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kocky

ReStructure Mix Update (11/21/17) "Remone” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kocky
Kocky is B.J. Watkins, Eddie Watkins Jr., Greg Moore and Gregg Field. Their album “Post No Bills” from 1979 is reminiscent of the disco band Machine in where the title track is a focus on the social injustice laid upon those less fortunate. Horns are provided by Arthur G. Wright on this project. “Remone” is the dance single that was also released as a 12” single and was quite popular at the end of the disco era with deejay and clubs working to keep the disco sound alive during a period where many releases saturated the market. The song has a percussion track which helps motivate the energy and a great vocal by B.J..

I have taken the 12” single and worked this ReStructure Mix to pull more out of the fantastic arrangement which includes disco strings. I added a few more spots for a breakdown and build of the energy.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/17) "Quick Slick” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Syreeta

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/17) "Quick Slick” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Syreeta

Syreeta is a Motown Records artist from the early 70s with one of the most beautiful voices in adult contemporary and soul. Her ballads have always painted wonderful pictures of love and promise and into the early 80s her venture into a pop-funk with producer Hal Davis. “Quick Slick” is a single from her 1981 album “Set My Love In Motion” which reached radio stations and dance floors with Syreeta’s sexy lure. The track describes a male figure that uses his charm and manly attributes to keep her always waiting for more. The song has always been a favorite of mine due to its sexy underground feel and the deep funky keyboards playing out the rhythm. It is a nice reminder of the electronic funk takeover of the early 80s following the big disco production takedown of the late 70s.

I have taken the 12” version of “Quick Slick” and aimed at the street-edit feel in this ReStructure Mix. A play with the keyboards introduces the mode for Syreeta’s playful vocals and works in and out of the original to give a new breath of funk-edits to life. It is another opportunity to feel that funky 80s period where “slick” was in – especially here.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/18/17) "Eyes Without A Face” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Alan Jones

Alan Jones is an Italo-disco singer and producer who covers Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without A Face” in 1990. During the late 80s Italo-disco was also growing in many directions and one was taking pop and rock songs and conforming them into a street beat synth arrangement with the swing samples of the dance period. This cover always caught my attention since the original has a haunting early morning quality and the Italo mix here captures it in a new way with the percolating synthesizers upfront and heavy beats. The vocal works well with the new arrangement and gives this dance cover more likeness.

I have taken the import 12” vocal, instrumental and dub versions to work a new ReStructure Mix which plays out more like an early morning mix supplement. It is geared more as a dub with extracts from the original to create an eerie and funky edge. One of the genres of dance music closest to my heart, this ReStructure is a salute to the 80s pop-rock dance era and the underground club sound which reverberates at 3 am.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/17/17) "Somebody To Love” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Café Society

Café Society is a South African band whose 1984 high energy hit on Passion Records is a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody To Love” from 1967. This psychedelic rock classic is transformed into a robotic high energy stomper thanks to the production by Costa Anadiotis. This one is an underground classic and a number from a high energy set from the mid-80s that is hard to forget. Café Society recorded one album for the high energy stage and this number stands out as the electronic pulse of high energy music.

I have taken the 12” of “Somebody To Love” by Café Society and the original from Jefferson Starship along with Grace Slick and transformed this ReStructure Mix into a salute to high energy and the original rock version. There are more breaks and some synth looping that not only extend the original 12’ but also pump it up to another level.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/16/17) "I Need You Tonight/Mediate” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – INXS

INXS is an Australian rock band that took the rock-funk title with their 1987 single “I Need You Tonight/Mediate” from the album “Kick”. It was 1980 when Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” took the stage with their rock and disco-funk arrangement and hardcore reputation for bringing an anthem to life in their own way. “I Need You Tonight/Mediate” was a big track for dance floors during its release and always brings to mind the bridge between rock and dance music which evolved again in the 80s. This number is a success with Michael Hutchence and his breathy and sexy vocal.

I have taken the 12” version on “I Need You Tonight/Mediate” and gave the segments of the track that echo the sexual energy and reworked this ReStructure Mix. Taking “Mediate” to the intro gives this rework a full underground overhaul. The fade uses the piece again to close the mystical swooning of messages from the lyrics making their new places.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/14/17) "Put Your Pants On” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Slick

Slick is a disco project from 1979, the peak of disco music production – and features studio musicians who also formed Fat Larry’s Band, singer Brandi Wells and The Sweethearts of Sigma in the chorus ensemble. The production from Butch Ingram is familiar with his studio group Philly Cream whose single “Motown Review” received radio and club success in 1979 also. “Put Your Pants On” is a track from the Slick album and was also featured on the B-side to their big hit “Space Bass” – which became an underground club hit and maintained its disc jockey status throughout the early 80s. It is a play on a sexy situation and uses a parody of sounds to play out its almost vaudevillian humor. It is an infectious rhythm however and one that I always found creative and fun from this project.

I have taken the album version (also 12”) of “Put Your Pants On” and purposely directed a ReStructure Mix at playing with the tinkling cowbells and funky backing guitar riffs. It is not only extended, but also some added punch gives this track another life.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/12/17) "Time” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stone

Stone is a funk-disco project released on West End Records in 1981. The project was produced by Auvil Gilchrist and mixed by Tee Scott. A sound that was familiar with Randy Mueller’s work with Skyy this kickin’ track captures the dreamy feel of a deep garage sound. The emphasis on the theme pulls into the song in a creative edge throughout this dance number. It has always stood out as a New York funk track and became a part of the Prelude Records take over in the early 80s. It is easy to understand why once you get into the feel of this track.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental to piece this ReStructure Mix into a whole new experience. The “tic toc” effect keeps time once again with a few new breaks and areas where the vocals help again to bring it new life.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/9/17) "High Flying, Adored” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Festival

Festival is a disco project from disco innovator, Boris Midney – who also gave us U.S.A. European Connection, Caress, Beautiful Bend, Masquerade and Companion. His early projects blended a European sound, a soulful Philly female ensemble and Midney’s space age approach to keyboard sound effects and classical disco strings swirling in and out of arrangements. This is a beautiful flow of underground disco which became Midney’s own sound. Robert Stigwood (RSO Records) hired Midney to create a disco-fied version of the monumental Andrew Lloyd Webber show “Evita”. The finished results are now a disco classic which evokes not only the Broadway production in a new phase but also keeps Midney’s magic alive.\

I have taken the album version of “High Flying, Adored” and recreated a lengthier and re-edited version for this ReStructure Mix. It brings the Latin rhythms further into the dance foundation of the song and uses pieces of the Broadway version as homage.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/9/17) "Goddess Of Love” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Phyllis Hyman

Phyllis Hyman is one of the promising voices of soul, disco, jazz and r&b during the mid-70s onto the 90s. Her vocal is recognizable unlike many today where the emotion is immediate and deeply moving. This style brought her success not only in the disco years of her career, but also the jazz and r&b movement with her years of the great Philadelphia International label along with producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. “Goddess Of Love” is a project from 1983 and is produced by Narada Michael Walden – who was turning many vocalists into dance floor sensations during the early 80s including Aretha Franklin, Sister Sledge and Stacy Latttisaw. The title track follows the theme of Phyllis taking her enchantment into a mythical jungle chanteuse – The Goddess of Love. The song works with her strong vocal play and the help of Narada’s creative production abilities. It is one that I would love to break in with an early evening set and always proved to start the dance floor moving to a new rhythm.

I have taken the album version of “Goddess Of Love” and edited and reworked a whole new adventure with several acts and breakdowns. It was early to leave Phyllis’ fabulous vocal intact and add a few new elements to give this tribal feel beat a new reason to hail this great lady of song. A percussion riff from a high energy track by the same name (not the same song) is added for the mystique of those who are familiar and are ready to move to the next level.

ReStructure Mix Update (11//17) "Sans Contrefaçon” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Mylene Farmer

Mylene Farmer is a French Canadian singer who released several dance tracks which found their way into a crossover phase for many disc jockeys searching for alternative dance music in the late 80s. Her album “Ansi Soit Je” from 1988 contains the single "Sans Contrefaçon” which I placed into many tea dance programs and during progressive evenings a peak set. The 12” single has a nice European feel with a melodic build along with the pounding high energy-street beat sound. One of the French songs of the time which lured me into an admiration for singers as Rose Laurens, Desireless, Jaki Quartz, Matia Bazar and Elsa. Great dance tracks with a nice stylish production alongside the dance beats for hardcore dance palaces.

I have taken the 12” “Boy Remix” and reassembled the arrangement in this ReStructure Mix to keep this wonderful track out in the open for those who appreciate the flavor of this dance genre. The pieces of this original remix are pulled out into the open in lengthier segments. Mylene’s beautiful vocal is the real focus here however and it is left intact.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/6/17) "Woman” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Mirage

Mirage is an Italo-Disco project from Ivana Spagna (vocals), Renzo Zannoni and Sebastiano Simonini. This early electronic production from 1983 is one of the sounds of the early pieces of experimental dance tracks which helped to make Italo-Disco the promising sound for dance floors. Creating a heavy layer of sequencers and keyboards in a robotic, yet smooth and melodic trance for vocals like Spagna’s who also helped to create the sound of Italo-Disco bands like Fun Fun. “Woman” is a simple piece with many great riffs which helped to make it one which stood out for the time. It is now considered a classic and still holds true to that feel which Italo-Disco makes it mark.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental to recreate a street-edged version for this ReStructure Mix. I have placed a familiar electro-street beat from Paul Hardcastle into the new mix to push out the rhythms and also remind those followers of just how diversified and progressive Italo-Disco is and was.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/4/17) "Love Dance” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Playmate

Playmate is a German disco project from producers Christian Bensch, Peter Wagner and Uli Roever (also known as Cup Productions). “Love Dance” is a single which was originally recorded in 1978 by an artist, Isabel and produced by the same group in 1978. This one is a classic disco sound blended with Spanish guitars, percussion and a sexy chorus – everything that disco music claimed to be in the late 70s. This one echoes over and over what chorus implies.

I have taken the 12” single version on Salsoul Records – originally remixed by Bobby “DJ” Guttadaro and recreated a ReStructure Mix with more overlaid percussion and guitar riffs to please every couple moving and swaying to this number. Always a favorite as an early evening charmer or an afterhours treat.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/3/17) "Hot Wax” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Denis LePage

Denis LePage is one of the pioneers from the disco period who had his talent in many projects and his own genius. His own disco group Lime who along with Denyse LePage created a new style of disco music evolving from a single titled “Your Love” from 1980 – paving the direction for high energy music. This was an exciting period and many of Denis’ affiliation with past productions were one its own merit. “Magnum” is from a 12” single and was the flip side to “Hot Wax” – it plays out in the genre of a hit Denis wrote and arranged by Kat Mandu titled “The Break”. An instrumental with sweeping strings and heavy percussion which topped the disco era like a cherry on a sundae. “Magnum” is similar yet with LePage’s work there is always a new feel and electricity to his arrangements.

I have taken the 12” of “Magnum” and reworked the percussion and synthesizer parts to a new ReStructure Mix. A few looping elements provide some new breaks and take on the original arrangement. This new piece is homage to the wonderful period of Denis LePage and his sound which today is more than a classic.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/3/17) "Freakin’ Time” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Asphalt Jungle

Asphalt Jungle is a disco/funk project from drummer/producer Keith Benson (MFSB) who creates a path for jazz, funk and disco to merge. This period of 1979 brought a return to the soulful elements of soul from which disco evolved. “Freakin’ Time” is a dream-like piece with the fusion of horns and the funk keyboards and sensual vocals which bring on more of a contemporary dance atmosphere. A big early evening and also afterhours must for those sleaze programs. Asphalt Jungle is one of those Paradise Garage records which you may stand in awe of for setting the pace for a new energy on the dance floor rejuvenated for the time.

I have taken the 12” single (Part1 and Part 2) to work this extended blend of both in this ReStructure Mix. A new bass sequencer pounds the intro to give more of the early morning sleaze feel. A favorite of mine and now using those funky riffs that I watched dance floors move to as they gave it up.
