ReStructure Mix Update (3/29/24): “Don’t Leave Me This Way” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The Communards

The Communards are Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat) and Richard Coles - a duo who released a few covers of disco classics in the 80’s high energy mode. Their 1986 cover of Thelma Houston’s big disco hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way” is one of the most incredible undertakings in the dance arena. Produced by Mike Thorne this piece is a hard hitting transformation of the soulful disco classic to the incredible performance by Jimmy Sommerville who takes each segment of the track and plays out the drama in his own style. This one was huge on dance floors and reminded those who know the song how wonderful the song was and those new listeners an advantage to experience such a masterful song.

I have taken the 12” version of The Communards “Don’t Leave Me This Way” and have given it a touch of a ReStructure Mix. A new bubbling and thumping beat are added to give it a new form in parts and the original arrangement is broken down into a new segmentation.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/27/24): “Don’t You Want Me Baby” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Mandy

Mandy (Amanda Louise Smith) is a PWL artist who along with the assistance of producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman released a few tracks in their genre of dance music. “Don’t You Want Me Baby” is Mandy’s cover of Human League’s bit synth-pop hit from 1981 with more energy and the SAW sound which rolls out like 3 barrels at once. Mandy’s vocals are faintly distributed throughout rolling bass sequencers and keyboards and yet the familiar chorus and riffs are nice to hear in a more energy driven version overall. The one made its debut in 1988 and did well on several high energy charts and the clubs which are still clamoring for energy dance music.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of Mandy’s “Don’t You Want Me Baby” and worked this cover into a new ReStructure Mix to give the classic song another shot. The sequencers are the main focus of this mix and give a lasting chance to slowly fade in and out of choruses.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/26/22): “Play That Beat D.J.” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – G.L.O.B.E. and Whiz Kid

G.L.O.B.E. and Whiz Kid are Harold McGuire and John Miller - a duo forming an early 80’s street beat group and releasing their 1983 single titled, “Play That Beat D.J.”. The early 80’s paved the way for rap to become an identity which became one of the inspirations of today's hip-hop genre. Produced by Craig Harris and Tom Silverman and released on the newly formed Tommy Boy Records, this early piece of simulated live rap from the deejay booth celebrates the man who brings it all together night after night - spinning those discs and keeping us on the floor. There are the scratch techniques which became an element in dance music and kept the rhythms and grooves new and fresh throughout the 90’s. A classic among the time period and one track which gives this genre a push into success.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “Play That Beat D.J.” and have given it a new motivation for this ReStructure Mix. I have added a few new sampled pieces from 70’s disco classics to speak to the feet in a new way. The overall new arrangement focuses on the building of a new dance and dublike version.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/23/24):”Kiss You All Over” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Exile

Exile is a pop/country band from Kentucky whose fame hit in 1978 with their #1 pop hit “Kiss You All Over” – produced by Mike Chapman. The track is a vocal treat where the layers of male vocals play out equivalent to a church choir in their crescendo. The song is one of the easy listening treats which fell close to the disco category of its time and also still plays out romantically as well. A 70’s classic which will remain a favorite among many thanks to its wonderful riffs and vocals.

I have taken the album version and instrumental versions of “Kiss You All Over” and laid the track out for a new ReStructure Mix. There is a heavy disco beat applied to bring a foundation of dance floor motivation and a new take on the arrangement.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/22/24):”Applause” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Angie Gold

Angie Gold is one of the high-energy artists with a voice which transcends the dance floor. “Applause” is her 1986 release produced by Nigel Wright and an appropriate song for this fantastic artist. The song feeds into the realm of needing the audience to have been satisfied and leaving the air with hands applauding and in turn this makes all of the work for our singer worth it all. One of the anthems of the time which has the singer who can bring it to life the right way. This one is a track which makes a dance floor move with appreciation as well.

I have taken the original 12” version and the album version of “Applause” and intertwined the two for this ReStructure Mix. I have added a downbeat for the energy and a few new breakdowns where the give the arrangement a familiar range.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/21/24):”Living My Own Life” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Earlene Bentley

Earlene Bentley is one of the high-energy divas from the Ian Levine/Fiachra Trench music legacy. “Living My Own Life” is Earlene’s 1984 single and gives us the complete high energy sound in one defiant message. Although the sound of high energy music of the time relied on the pumping bass and percussion it was always the diva which Levine and Trench placed on the track which mattered most. “Living My Own Life” is an anthem of self-esteem and power within ones soul and makes this number pound out more on the message than the orchestra drums. It is the 80’s dance sound which will forever bring about the feeling of an uplifting moment on the dance floor.

I have taken the 12” version of “Living My Own Life” and redeveloped the pieces of this message into a new ReStructure Mix. I have used the existing keyboard riffs and pounding drum break to recreate a new outline for Earlene’s powerful rejoice.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/19/24):”Sweet and Low” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Debbie Harry

Debbie Harry is an 80’s icon who covered the music scene in her own way beginning with her big disco hit from 1978, “Heart Of Glass”. Although Harry’s voice was appropriate for those new-wave and rock edged tracks her voice also flowed like a disco chanteuse in a lovely manner. “Sweet and Low” is a single from her 1989 project “Def, Dumb and Blonde” – produced by Arthur Baker. The song is a melodic trip into a love fantasy where no matter what occurs around it cannot interfere with the lure of this love. It is perhaps one of the most lyrical since “Heart Of Glass” in a vocal delivery from Harry. It is now an underground classic and one that should not have anything shoveled over it.

I have taken the 12’ versions of “Sweet and Low” and reignited this ‘sweet’ piece again for a ReStructure Mix. The heavy bass tracks were what have always caught my ear and the flowing of Debbie and her beautiful vocal are rearranged this time around.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/18/24):”Happy Together” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Terms Of Surrender

Terms Of Surrender is a studio group from 1983 and produced by Mark Berry. “Happy Together” is their beat-box cover of The Turtles 1967 rock classic and down with layers and layers of syndrums and reverberations. The eerie feel of this cover is enough to place it in that early morning music/sleaze category that was so alive in the mid and late 80’s. The vocals are haunting also as they echo throughout this arrangement and give off a new feel far from the original. This one was always a favorite of mine since it covers that morning mood and also transpires a classic into a left field style and very well. This cut was featured on Disconet’s Volume 5 Program 12 Issue.

I have taken the Disconet mix of Terms Of Surrender’s “Happy Together” and worked it in another new way for this ReStructure Mix. The moody sound of those keyboards gave me inspiration to use a classic disco number from Donna Summer and that sequencer weaving a moog bass from “Working The Midnight Shift” – keeping this one underground and rare.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/17/24):”The Disco Spaceship” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Laurie Marshall

Laurie Marshall is a disco artist from Canada whose act is quite unique with the 1977 song, “The Disco Spaceship” – produced by Ralph Murphy. It is pure camp as Laurie performs the track in a funky-galactic-drag outline. Complete with a powdered white wig and alien makeup. It is the formula where the track is as outrageous as the performer. It works in the deepest sense of disco-camp and confirms again how the 70’s obsession with space and the universe played a fantasy in many ways including in this type of dance track. The simple keyboard tracks are played out in an arrangement which only allows the song to bring an interesting connection between spaceships and dance floors.

I have taken the 45 rpm version of “The Disco Spaceship” and landed a new version for this ReStructure Mix. More layering of the keyboard tracks make new layers of galactic disco for this disco candy treat.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/16/24):”It Should Have Been You” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gwen Guthrie

ReStructure Mix Update (3/16/24):”It Should Have Been You” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gwen Guthrie

Gwen Guthrie is a singer who began as a session singer with notable projects as Gregg Diamond’s Bionic Boogie debut album. Her talents as a songwriter also gave her expose with many top pop and soul artists. “It Should Have Been You” is from her first solo album from 1982 – produced by Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and Steven Stanley. The project gave Gwen a new identity for her unique vocal and sound. The song focuses around missed opportunities in a relationship which may have ended too soon as many of the great elements are wonderful memories and strengths. Gwen performs this as a simple note to give her presence a relaxed delivery and also a flow with the funky groove of this music.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “It Should Have Been You” and have reconnected this piece to a new ReStructure Mix. I have added a new drum track to give it a deeper groove and also created a few new breaks using Gwen’s iconic phrases.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/15/24):”Evergreen” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Hazell Dean

ReStructure Mix Update (3/15/24):”Evergreen” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Hazell Dean

Hazell Dean is a British pop singer who became the high energy diva of the 80’s. “Evergreen” is her cover of Barbra Streisand’s hit from 1976 and in a production from Willi Morrison & Ian Guenther (THP Orchestra, Sticky Fingers, Duncan Sisters, and Southern Exposure) brings the ballad on the dance floor with grace and energy. The full on electronic production is the 80’s standard where beautiful songs and suggestive orchestral segments met with the new sound of time. The vocal from Hazell is perhaps the more important areas here as not any singer recreate a pop hit with such a smooth impact. This is one of the great moments where the beat and the ballad collide with great accomplishment.

I have taken the 12” version of Hazell Dean’s “Evergreen” and rematches it in this ReStructure Mix along with the original. The segments work together to recreate the tenderness of the song and yet more energy for the dance floor.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/14/24):”Power Of Persuasion” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Pointer Sisters

Pointer Sisters are the powerhouse act of the 80’s. Their music always found a place on dance floors and their energy and lasting stance. “Power Of Persuasion” is a single from 1988 and was produced by Jerry Knight and Aaron Zigman. The song was from the film “Caddyshack II” and plays out as powerful as their 80’s dance hits but with a bit more of a Euro-house sound. The ladies again tease us with the promise of something good as long as the answer is “yes”. This one gives Pointer Sisters another dance track which begins with excitement and ends in satisfaction.

I have taken the 12” vocal and dub version of “Power Of Persuasion” and reworked another stamp for this ReStructure Mix. I have taken the riffs from the song and moved them around like a game of Old Maid. The power is added a few new breakdowns to piece the drums, vocals and keyboards into a new segment.
