ReStructure Mix Update – Special Eighties Edition (12/25/13) “Holiday” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Madonna

ReStructure Mix Update – Special Eighties Edition (12/25/13) “Holiday” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Madonna

Madonna brought the 80s an exciting new way to look at dance music and bring change to the music industry and place an artist in the driver’s seat. Her first 12” release titled “Everybody” was a promise of more to come – and the album had that proof:  “Holiday” is the track that brought a full circle to the first of many which Madonna achieved. Produced by John “Jellybean” Benitez – a club DJ who brought dance floors many of it’s own requests from his own experience behind the spinning vinyl.

I have taken the album version of “Holiday” and have given it a new ReStructure Mix to lay out a new day for celebration for all – as the meaning of disco resembles – all. The bass, guitars and beats as chopped and rearranged along with a few samples from a few past “holidays”.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/23/13) “You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – David Joseph

ReStructure Mix Update (12/23/13) “You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – David Joseph

David Joseph has one of the 80’s electronic funk singles which marks The Paradise Garage and its progressive dance groove during the new generation of hardcore club movers. The track has the feel of the underground New York sound which helped to influence many new disc jockeys and artists to look towards a more raw and basic feel.

I have taken the US 12” and have given it a ReStructure Mix to add a new dimension to the song. It has many new curves added and I have given the lyrics and meaning more of an opportunity to let the body do the talking.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Alan Hawkins of Facebook – with thanks for his support, kind words and love for the music that goes boom in the night!

ReStructure Mix Update (12/21/13) “Chanson D’llegance” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – D’llegance

ReStructure Mix Update (12/21/13) “Chanson D’llegance” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – D’llegance

D’llegance is a disco group from Ian Levine and Rick Gianatos whose first single from 1979 was a double sided “Share My Love” and “Midnight Ride” – production in the Ian Levine-disco orchestration and vocals in soulful harmony. The second single in 1982 is a band-anthem titled, “Chanson D’llegance” which gives several French verses as a riff and a definition of the savor faire the band was to portray,

I have taken the Airwave Records 12” vocal and extended instrumental and created a ReStructure Mix which plays a bit more with bits and pieces of the groove and vocal to create a new edit with some new break-fills inserted. The original version was always a hit on my dance floor during its release and helped to being back chic-disco edge in the early 80s.

“Boogie Business” by Lamont Dozier – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Boogie Business” by Lamont Dozier – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Lamont Dozier (party of the Motown acclaimed Holland-Dozier-Holland song writing/production team) releases his 1979 disco album “Bittersweet” in 1978 with funky-disco track “Boogie Business” and it seems as though time has never let him go. The track was a hit in many clubs and brought back the groove with soul and shine intact. It is one of the disco-licious songs that I favor from the period that was indeed a sleeper for many.

In this Disco Video Mix I have blended the 1979 now-disco classic film “Disco Godfather” starring Rudy Ray Moore and Carol Speed – for all reasons that seem appropriate for the club-sonic disco DJ who is also known as The Disco Godfather. It paints the song a nice picture taking the violence and drub overtones away. Leaving a dance floor full of people doing their own “business”.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/13/13) “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Paris Connection

ReStructure Mix Update (12/13/13) “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Paris Connection

Paris Connection is symphonic disco project from Alec R. Costandinos who brought us Sumeria, Love & Kisses and his disco operettas of “Romeo & Juliet” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. His music brought the Euro-disco sound to another end of dance floors along with Cerrone and Don Ray. His project for Paris Connection contained to disco covers of pop-songs from the 60s: “Eloise” and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. Both arranged in the disco symphony formula where new pieces were added to detail the side long versions.

The album was arranged and conducted by Raymond Tarass Knehntsky

I have taken the B-side of Paris Connection (from the LP version) and created a new ReStructure Mix with a much easier intro and few new elements to make this sweet production move differently. The 18:03 long album version is trimmed down and re-waxed.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/12/13) “If You Can Dance You Can Do It” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Slimline

ReStructure Mix Update (12/12/13) “If You Can Dance You Can Do It” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Slimline

Slimline is an electronic dance project from producer Mike Leander – who is known for his productions of The Glitter Band in the early 70s. This infectious single from 1982 works on the aerobics craze of the time period and a stompin’ rhythm beat that creates a solid foundation for a “Madison-rap” and peaks that sound sinister as well as energetic. It is the only material leased from Slimline and a number that brings back the disco power of early 80s.

I have taken the vocal and the instrumental (with count) and created a ReStructure Mix that uses for electronics from Kraftwerk to accent the climbing and falling arrangement. It is lengthier and more fun as the trio guide you through this hypnotic dance experience.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/11/13) “Young Hearts Run Free” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Candi Staton

ReStructure Mix Update (12/11/13) “Young Hearts Run Free” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Candi Staton
Candi Staton is a soul singer who began recording in 1970 with a voice that was inspirational and brought a warm to souls. Her singing career eventually brought her into the 70s disco scene where her big 1976 hit, “Young Hearts Run Free” became an instant anthem and classic among club and music enthusiasts. The track was written and produced by Dave Crawford who also helped Candi through a few more dance floor hits.

I have taken the album version of “Young Hearts Run Free” and have given this ReStructure Mix more breaks and some dub-like pieces. It is the flavor of disco music which never grows tired as classic soul and Motown. There are a few pieces of Candi from affiliated feelings in a follow up hit which I had a moment of reflection of how disco music can mark moments in life with such emotion.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Anthony Gioffre – thank you for asking for this wonderful track and "keep feeling it" – it is a great gift.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/10/13) “Slave To The Rhythm” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Grace Jones

ReStructure Mix Update (12/10/13) “Slave To The Rhythm” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Grace Jones

Grace Jones – period! No introduction needed. It has been years that Ms. Jones has held the mystique of art and fierce persona. Fashion and music are just natural for this performer who take the ordinary and creates the uniqueness. Who knows is we will ever see it again? But who cares…just go back to Grace. You’ll find it there.

“Slave To The Rhythm” is from the album of 1985 produced by Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn - creating a new stage for Grace to give inspiration to the rhythm and sound of art. I have taken the single version from the US 12” single and have created a ReStructure Mix which points towards an early morning rendition of the original production including an overture.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Van Belgie Grace on Facebook and the thanks for keeping the panther out of the cage. Thank you Van Belgie Grace also for the kindness.

“I Got That Feeling” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Love De-Luxe

“I Got That Feeling” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Love De-Luxe

Love De-Luxe is a disco project from Alan Hawkshaw who also worked with Miquel Brown and his own 80s dance group K.I.D. (“Don’t Stop"). His album “Again and Again” features many of musicians from the Munich Disco Recordings – including Les Hurdle, Ray Cooper and Pat Halling on strings. The album was one of the Euro-disco gems of its time with the big crossover song, “Here Comes That Sound Again”.

I have taken the album version of “I Got That Feeling” and have given it a new ReStructure Mix to give the verses a new layout and arrangement. It is one of the most beautiful recordings with the disco orchestration and synthesized backup.

“Delicate Jan” by Azoto – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Delicate Jan” by Azoto – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Azoto (originally called Lucrethia and The Azoto 14,008) is an Italo-disco project from 1978 from arranger, Celso Valli and producer Armando Sciascia (founder of Italian label Vedette Records). Their album “Dance Skinations” was right on target with disco rhythms and the sensuality of disco music during the formation of a stage for many waiting to free personal desires. “Delicate Jan” is a single from the album which shares a few riffs in common with Celso Valli’s big classic group Tantra’s “Hills Of Kat Mandu” which followed this production. The odd vocals and themes are interesting and definitely a disco sensation.

I have taken the song “Delicate Jan” – which appears to be about a sexy woman who drives both the men and women mad with her blatant sexual behavior but at the same time is sweet in nature. It is edited to excerpts from Brigitte Bardot in Roger Vadim’s “And God Created Woman” – where the 18-year old orphan finds it difficult to restrain her sexuality and leads to much drama among three men. It also gives the disco track a beauty that moves quite “delicately” to the rhythm!

“Beatles 60’s Medley” by Stars On 45 – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Beatles 60’s Medley” by Stars On 45 – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Stars On 45 is a Dutch dance project started by Jaap Eggermont where “bits and pieces” of classic rock, standards and pop songs were compiled into a medley. Inspired by a DJ bootleg disc titled “Let’s Do It Again” from 1980 where the actual songs were mixed over the rhythm track to “Nanu, Nanu (I Wanna Funky Wich You)” by Daddy Dewdrops. This mass production included medleys from ABBA, Motown, rock giants and The Beatles.

“Beatles 60’s Medley” is from the first album released by Stars On 45 which soon became a touring group covering medleys by various pop groups with sound-alike singers and tracks.

I have taken the medley and blended it with The Beatles 1964 comedy, “A Hard Day’s Night” which features clips and images from the days in the lives of these very talented men who are now the markers in history for a wave of new rock n’ roll.

The film was directed by Richard Lester

ReStructure Mix Update (12/3/13) “Dancing Is Alright” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – THP

ReStructure Mix Update (12/3/13) “Dancing Is Alright” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – THP

THP (Three Hats Productions) are the sound of producers Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison who also brought us The Duncan Sisters, Skatt Brothers, Sticky Fingers, The Immortals and Southern Exposure. A bold blaring sound for disco music which helped to bring the power of the big “orchestral’ band sound. THP is a project not only based on their name but each project dedicated to a new sound for a new vocalist: Barbara Fry on “Two Hot For Love” – The Duncan Sisters on “Tender Is The Night” and Joyce Cobb on “Good To Me”.

I have taken the fierce track “Dancing Is Alright” from the “Good To Me” album and reworked it into a new ReStructure Mix for some looped action and fun with segments. One powerful disco album where each track stands on its own. A die-hard piece of vinyl for me

ReStructure Mix Update (12/2/13) “Two Of Hearts” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stacey Q

ReStructure Mix Update (12/2/13) “Two Of Hearts” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stacey Q

Stacey Q (Stacey Lynn Swain) is a pop-dance act from producer Jon St James (Bardeux, Red Flag, Anything Box) who made the simple sound of synthesizers fill in the gap of mid-80s dance floors. It was a return to the sweet sound of disco music and a bit of street sampling – for the single “Two Of Hearts” from 1986.

I have taken the 12” “Extended Mix”, “Instrumental” and pieces of the “Acapella” to give this 80s dance classic a ReStructure Mix – working more on the funky kick-ass beats from the break and making them the foundation of this new experience. It is a 80s feel that remains close to our hearts – both of them!

ReStructure Mix Update (11/27/13) “How” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Flower

ReStructure Mix Update (11/27/13) “How” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Flower

Flower is a sexy disco number in the vein of sultry and amorous moods. Her second album titled “Heat” is produced by Richie Rome – who collaborated with Jacques Morali to create The Ritchie Family in 1975. The full orchestration in the Philly-tradition gives his music the fantasy angle which disco music is meant to bring.

“How” is a very sensual number from the “Heat” album and is a favorite among those who savor the full-disco experience. More of the yearning and ecstasy that love and desire are brought to the surface in disco music of the 70s. I have taken the “Long” and “Short” version of the 12” and recreated a drum-fantasy ReStructure Mix to soothe over those “playgirl”-esque vocals of Flower.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/26/13) “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Samantha Fox

ReStructure Mix Update (11/26/13) “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Samantha Fox

Samantha Fox is a pop-dance singer who was transformed from glamour model to dance floor sexpot. The early days of Samantha Fox are in the girlish pop singer genre where streets are the haven for being naughty and nice. Her second album features a track produced by non-other than the kings of 80’s dance music Stock, Aitken and Waterman – who transform her style into gold. A nice raging number that maintains sweetness thanks to Samantha’s whispery delivery.

I have taken the “Extended Mix” and “Instrumental” from the 12” single and recreated a new “stop” – and go mix with more emphasis on those SAW classic synthesizers. Pieces of drum beats and lyrics are tossed around to give the new version a dub-like edge. A special cameo by three ladies adds the finale blow to Samantha’s direction.

“Holly Dolly” by Kano – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Holly Dolly” by Kano – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Kano is an Italo-disco group from 1980 with Luciano Ninzatt, Stefano Pulga and Matteo Bonsanto. Their first self-titled album contained six innovative disco tracks which helped dance floors move comfortably into a new era of dance music. A track not included on the album and only as a 12” B-side to the hot single “I’m Ready” is another electro-funk gem titled “Holly Dolly”. If you were fortunate enough to have a DJ who would flip the hit side over and spin this adventure it was another dancing pleasure.

I have taken “Holly Dolly” and got a little playful blending it with the 1969 musical comedy, “Hello Dolly” starring Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau – using segments of the big Harmonia Gardens dance sequence to give some funk and new steps to the cast. It is a play with titles and finishes as Dolly Levi taken to the dance floor of the 80s.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/20/13) “Lover To Lover” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Joe Yellow|

ReStructure Mix Update (11/20/13) “Lover To Lover” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Joe Yellow|

Joe Yellow (Domenico Ricchini) is an Italian disco singer who released a big Italo-disco hit in 1983 titled “Lover To Lover” – produced by Roberto Turatti and Mikki Chieregato. The track laid out a powerful and pulsating dance beat and sweeping keyboards which created a sound completing the early 80s dance experience. The track played out as a formula for high energy music which was being produced out of the UK during the same time.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental from the US release and recreated a new ReStructure Mix keeping the pleading and loving question upfront and only adding some new playful elements to make the return of this powerful piece fun and infectious again.

Dedicated to all of the hard-core Italo-disco fans and dancers!

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/13 “The End” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Change

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/13 “The End” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Change

Change is a disco project from producer Jacques Fred Petrus who also brought us Macho, Peter Jacques Band, Rudy and Revanche. Disco music emerged into a new experience following his innovative electronic arrangements. The project for Change was I am sure intended to create a new sound for the 1980 for dance floors. The tracks were in the pulsating disco vein and also in a New York funk groove which proved successful after the first single from the album, “A Lover’s Holiday” became the anthem of that year.

I have taken the closing track from the project appropriately titled “The End” which is an Italo-disco instrumental which sounds like an instrumental from Space. It is layered beautifully and offers a more ambient and new age sound – along with the pulsating disco sequencers. The production was completed by arrangers David Romani, Paolo Gianolio and Mauro Malavasi.

The new ReStructure Mix adds some new breaks and feel to the flow of the piece.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/13) “Vamp” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gregg Diamond’s Hardware

ReStructure Mix Update (11/19/13) “Vamp” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gregg Diamond’s Hardware

Gregg Diamond is a disco producer who was formerly a member of a rock-band, Five Dollar Shoes from 1972. His 1975 production of Andrea True Connection’s “More, More, More” gave him immediate attention in the soul and disco genre. His style was truly a layered production with many riffs and grooves for the quickly emerging disco sound. His project Bionic Boogie from 1977 is one of the examples of Diamond’s touch in combining soulful vocals with his unique arrangements – along with the assistance of Tom Moulton extending the songs for discotheques which was the new edge on soul and funk music.

Hardware is a project from 1979 with a sound that displays how disco music matured and revitalized itself almost to a mechanical beat and outline. His vocal ensemble is close to the Bionic Boogie projects with a feel of rock infused.

“Vamp” is a clip-track from the album that is actually the closing of another song from the project titled “War Paint (Love Line)” (featuring a saxophone solo from David Sanborn). It is merely one of Diamond’s plays with a vocal riff and the infectious rhythm of his guitar and drum kicks. I have taken the same theme and extended with lots of tricks and new breaks to frame the chant, “Did she dance?”

ReStructure Mix Update (11/11/13) “Super Extra Sexy Sign” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kano

ReStructure Mix Update (11/11/13) “Super Extra Sexy Sign” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kano

Kano is an Italian disco project featuring Luciano Ninzatti, Stefano Pulga and Matteo Bonsanto. The sound of Italo-disco hit the roof with their big 1980 hit “I’m Ready”. It was a sound that came from space somewhere or an altar of dance worship. The album was one of the great electronic episodes from the band in the early high energy vein.

“Super Extra Sexy Sign” is one of the singles from the project which was released as a single and made big impact with its keyboard drama and strange vocal incantations. I have taken the 12” version and have given it a new way of feeling – using the intro keyboards to emphasize the groove of the little gem.

“Falling In Love Again” by The Technos – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Falling In Love Again” by The Technos – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Technos are Bev Sage and Steve Farnie (also known as Techno Twins), Their contribution to 80s dance music is one of the edges on electronic beats and 80s new-wave vocals. Their 1985 album “Foreign Land” contains three of the periods big surprise singles including the title track, “Nighttime Heaven” and “Falling In Love Again”. The lead vocals by Bev Sage headline the dub-like disco edge of Farnie’s dreamy music.

I have taken their cover of “Falling In Love Again” – the 1930 German song composed by Friedrich Hollander with the film in which it appears: “The Blue Angel” starring Marlene Dietrich to give some fun to both media in a new whole new effect. It pieces some of the iconic images of Marlene and also the tragic fall of our main character.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/7/13) “I Hope It’s The Right Time” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Inner Life

Inner Life is a disco project from Greg Carmichael, Patrick Adams and lead vocalist, Jocelyn Brown – in continuance of the full-on New York disco sound of the late seventies. The project follows the percussion driven tracks with a fusion of soul and sophistication. Echoes of the Musique and Bumblebee Unlimited sessions are here in a dance extravaganza.

I have taken the album version of “I Hope It’s The Right Time” which was one of the second picks for disc jockeys following the big success of the first single from the album “I’m Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)” and have given it a ReStructure Mix to add a few more hooks and segues to new breaks. The lead vocal by Jocelyn Brown is that magical sound which made dance floors identify with disco music – and the back-up vocals are the Inner Life experience.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Mr. Patrick Adams, Ken Mazur and Ms. Jocelyn Brown

“Mucho Macho” by M.A.N. – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Mucho Macho” by M.A.N. – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

M.A.N. is a disco project from Bert Keyes, Bob Larimer and George Barrie. Released on Lollipop Records out of Germany in 1979 it is an obvious take on the “macho” phase of the 70s disco scene with Village People and Celi Bee. It is a fun and groovy disco track with more emphasis on the theme and stand-and-pose arrangements. It is disco music at its most cloned.

I have taken the Walt Disney animated musical fantasy “Hercules” and blended the camp and crazy mythology take to create this Disco Video Mix. It works with the excitement of the chorus adoring muscle and manly moves.

“Tiger Tiger (Feel Good For A While)” by Gregg Diamond’s Bionic Boogie – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Tiger Tiger (Feel Good For A While)” by Gregg Diamond’s Bionic Boogie – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Gregg Diamond’s Bionic Boogie is one of the 70s disco projects with sophistication and groove which brought three unique productions. Diamond’s work in 1975 with Andrea True Connection (“More, More, More” ) brought a dance sound which pointed in the shift of disco music’s pop appeal. “Tiger Tiger” is the third album from 1979 and presented a tough edged disco with a slight touch of rock and his soulful ensembles.

“Tiger Tiger (Feel Good For A While)” is the title track and moves like the dense and dark arrangement which Diamond may have created to move into the 80s. I have taken the 1982 fantasy-horror film “Cat People” starring Nastassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell – this remake of the 1942 classic is a bit more in the erotic arena and fills the edge of the disco track well.

ReStructure Mix Update (10/27/13) “Race” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – A Taste Of Honey

ReStructure Mix Update (10/27/13) “Race” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – A Taste Of Honey

A Taste of Honey was a disco act formed in Los Angeles, CA -  Hazel P. Payne, Janice M. Johnson, Donald R. Johnson and Perry Kibble. Their big disco classic “Boogie Oogie Oogie” from 1978 introduced a smooth soul edge to disco music. Their Grammy award from 1979 as “Best New Artist” gave the group only a part of what they have given dance music history.

“Another Taste” is the bands second project from 1979 and was released during a highly saturated disco market. It was another juicy piece of soul and disco played out well with classic sound of the band. “Race” is a track from the album which made my playlist and remains the “Honey” sound with its groovy bass guitar licks and instrumental beauty.

I have taken the album version to give the song a ReStructure Mix which works more on an extended play on the songs fierce drop-breaks and those sweet vocals.

ReStructure Mix Update (10/18/13) “Munich Machine Medley – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Munich Machine

ReStructure Mix Update (10/18/13) “Munich Machine Medley – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Munich Machine

Munich Machine is a disco project lead by Giorgio Moroder and created a sound during the mid and late seventies which gave disco a new sound and label. Much of the music coming from Munich consisted of musicians who were apart of the new funky sound which was being formulated and used to make many disco stars including Donna Summer. The 1977 album “Munich Machine” was a blockbuster moment for dance floors and DJs. It was the underground disco sound in a polished form.

I have taken the side two medley which includes instrumental movements from Giorgio’s solo projects, Donna Summer and Roberta Kelly which were making big marks both overseas and in the US. The medley blends each track into a non-stop disco party. I have created a ReStructure Mix and played with some of the elements to create a kaleidoscope-like disco mix.

"Dance Until You Drop" by Ritz - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Dance Until You Drop" by Ritz - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Ritz is Kofi Missah, Ruby James and Tony Jackson -- a disco trio who gave us one album titled "Puttin' On The Ritz" produced by Ken Gold. The album featured two dance floor hits: "Locomotion" and "Dance Until You Drop". The timing of this project may have prevented the group from gaining more popularity. The arrangements were a nice style of funk and disco.

I have taken the track "Dance Until You Drop" and blended it with the 1969 drama, "They Shoot Horses Don't They"" starring Jane Fonda and Michael Sarrazin. The film centers around a Depression-era dance marathon and the drama of the contestant participating and the physical draining of this knock down-drag out contest. It plays out with the title and mild atmospheric sound of this disco single.

ReStructure Mix Update (10/17/13) “Temptation Eyes” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gino Soccio

ReStructure Mix Update (10/17/13) “Temptation Eyes” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gino Soccio

Gino Soccio marks the end of the seventies with a style of electronic dance which matures in an ambient and new-age vibe – with rhythm and funk. His move throughout the 80s was marked three unique albums to his sound. Each is an innovative and genius attempt for this musician, songwriter and artist.

“Temptation Eyes” is Soccio’s cover of The Grass Roots 1971 pop-rock classic. Performed in Soccio’s programmed rhythm and interpretive style. This was released as a 12” single in 1985 and was a gift for those who could get lost in the simple layering and sound of Gino Soccio’s productions and arrangements.

This ReStructure Mix is an alternative to the 12” and gives a few moments of earlier work on the “Outline” album. It was a reason to play with Gino’s work again and hear that build over and over again!

"Sharks Are Cool, Jets Are Hot" by The Quick -- Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Sharks Are Cool, Jets Are Hot" by The Quick -- Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Quick is a dance pop band from England - Colin Campsie and George McFarlane. Their 1982 album "Fascinating Rhythm" is one of the early synth pop albums which followed the departure of disco. "Sharks Are Cool, Jets Are Hot" is the first single release in 1979 and there was some excitement among DJs and dance floors with this pop edge and hardcore disco synthesizers and percussion. It was produced by Rhett Davies who also worked with Eno and Roxy Music.

I have taken the 1961 musical "West Side Story" and used the borrowed theme from "Sharks Are Cool, Jets Are Hot" to create a new experience for both the disco classic and the William Shakespeare inspired American musical.

Matt's Fantasy Club is a New Beat/Belgium Beat session from the late 80s from Morton Sherman Bellucci -- who were a big part of the electronic new beat movement. "Big T" is a playful track with samples outlining a pair of pluses for a pair of eyes. This one always made me smile when I played it during a house set and somehow got the dancers straining to hear what they were moving to.

I have taken the 1958 British/American comedy "The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw" starring Kenneth More and Jayne Mansfield. I had a little too much fun with this one and the point is easy to understand.

Their presence in the late 70s help to complete the electronic sound of disco music along with a wonderful string and horn arrangement from Herb Jimmerson who was a part of the Fantasy Records disco family. Vi Ann had a unique sound which used the disco tracks as instant classics and also a favorite among DJs and dancers.

“Poinciana” is a cover of the Ahmad Jamal 1958 lounge song which appears on the first album by Paradise Express. A very beautiful disco rendition that gives the song a new life with that disco fusion.

I have taken the 1980 romantic adventure “The Blue Lagoon” and dashed some of the tropical scenes and love sequences to fulfill the treatment of this Disco Video Mix.

“Love Waves” by Patty Heart – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Love Waves” by Patty Heart – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Patty Heart is a German disco artist with her 1986 electronic dance track, “Love Waves” produced by Andy Free and Jozef Smits. The single was an underground piece which caught my attention during my time at a stand up club where music helped to paint the environment. The song has an eerie feel which sounds a bit robotic and a sensual. It was perfect for the mode that I was favored at creating during the early morning peak hours.

I have taken the track and blended it with the 1944 musical, “Bathing Beauty” starring Esther Williams as the water-queen of her first Technicolor musical. It moves like the music where the rhythmic pace seems like a wave of arms and legs serenading in a peculiar edge.

The film was directed by George Sidney

ReStructure Mix Update (10/7/13) “You Take My Heart Away” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gillian Lane

ReStructure Mix Update (10/7/13) “You Take My Heart Away” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Gillian Lane

Gillian Lane is a Canadian disco artist who helped to fill the gap between disco and high energy during the early 80s. Along with producers Gino D’ Orazio and Tony Bentivegna who also created tracks by Suzy Q, Nightlife Unlimited. Motion, Sweet Heat, Stephanie Wells and Ladies Choice – this was the melodic and pulsating sound of a new disco energy.

A new ReStructure Mix of “You Take My Heart Away” is extended and also teasing in the disco deejay fashion of spoon feeding little by little. It is one of my favorite Canadian disco tracks from this fabulous era and has that haunting sound of a love song with power, passion and a driving underground energy.

ReStructure Mix Update – Special Eighties Edition (10/6/13) “Hang On To Your Love” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Sade

ReStructure Mix Update – Special Eighties Edition (10/6/13) “Hang On To Your Love” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Sade

Sade is a British soul-jazz group with the sound of a classic vocalist (Sade Adu) and the reflection of music which paints the atmosphere as well as entertains. Their first album “Diamond Life” was produced by Robin Miller and gave the mid-80s a new sound and group which even today brings excitement and soul satisfaction.

I have taken the single “Hang On Your Love” which was released as a 12” dance single – and have given it the ReStructure Mix treatment to play with the wording, piano riffs and rhythms. It is more of a dub-like feel – but is there to give another listen to a great song. In a new way.

ReStructure Mix Update – Special Eighties Edition (10/4/13) “Lost In Emotion” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam are Lisa Velez , Mike Hughes and Spanador – an 80s funk group who delivered four albums which created a new dance sound for a dance floor ready for a new groove. Their second LP “Spanish Fly” was a welcome site for ready feet. Produced by Full Force a band formed in Brooklyn, New York. It was street sound which could apply to a new generation of dancers.

I have taken the 12” single and used the F.F. remix and “Can’t Find Myself Mix” to create a new ReStructure Mix which begins with a new driving force and adds a few breakdowns and a surprise guest vocalist who is quite fitting.

“Hotel Paradise” by Diva Gray & Oyster – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Hotel Paradise” by Diva Gray & Oyster – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Diva Gray is a vocalist who began as a back-up vocalist for Harry Belafonte and then a member of The Harlettes (Bette Midler’s troupe). Her disco career is quite well known, if even by ear. She is the magic voice behind many classic tracks – “Paradise” by Change as well as Gregg Diamond projects, Joe Thomas, Chic, Phyllis Hyman, Roundtree and Meco sessions. Her solo effect with disco producer, Luigi Ojival (Oyster) was an album from 1979 titled “Hotel Paradise”.

I have taken the title track – which is a fun and silly make-believe hotel called “Paradise” which is actually a mental facility. It blends perfectly with the 1972 screwball comedy, “What’s Up Doc?” starring Barbra Streisand, Ryan O’ Neil and Madeline Kahn. With a few effects and imagination the Hotel Bristol becomes the Hotel Paradise.

ReStructure Mix Update (10/2/13) “Sooner Or Later” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Nina Schiller

ReStructure Mix Update (10/2/13) “Sooner Or Later” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Nina Schiller

Nina Schiller (released originally as Crystal & The Team) worked dance floors into a frenzy with her first single, “(Won’t You) Dance With Me” in 1981. The popularity of the track and the power of producer Bill Motley’s part in the dance resurgence in San Francisco created an album, “Stay The Night” on Moby Dick Records.

“Sooner Or Later” is a track also featured on the 12” single and was re-produced with Nina again leading the beautiful and lyrical chorus. This time around the pumping sequencers gave the song and Nina a new energy to make dancers feel lovely all over again.

I have taken the album version of “Sooner Or Later” and have given it a new ReStructure Mix with a new extended play and some fun-tweaks along the way. It is a powerhouse high energy song from the early 80s and should always be included as well as the voice of Ms. Nina Schiller.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to the wonderful, Nina Schiller – and thank you for the “phone call”, Nina – the answer is past tense – I am a fan and always have been!

“Double Cross” by First Choice – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Double Cross” by First Choice – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

First Choice is the Philly-trio with the groove that center in on soul with the smooth sound that made disco a household word. Their 1979 album “Hold Your Horses” had arrived with enough ammunition to set dance floors ablaze. The title track was only the beginning in this package produced by Tom Moulton, Thor Baldursson, McKinley Jackson and Norman Harris. Deep garage disco with sparkle of this trio’s magic notes.

I have taken “Double Cross” and blended it with 1986 black comedy “Ruthless People” starring Danny DeVito, Bette Midler and Judge Reinhold. The upset story of revenge, blackmail and plenty of surprises labels well with the undermining cheat and realization of the disco number.

The film was directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker

ReStructure Mix Update (10/1/13) “Space Warrior” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Munich Machine

ReStructure Mix Update (10/1/13) “Space Warrior” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Munich Machine

Munich Machine is a disco studio group comprised of many members of early recordings from early disco artists such as Donna Summer, Roberta Kelly, Dino Solera and Chris Bennett. The sound of Giorgio’s productions seem to mature here with the popularity of disco music growing and the need for more commercial sets. The first self-titled Munich Machine album featured a medley of tracks from Donna Summer and solo Giorgio albums where the productions feature the Munich ensemble behind the scenes.

“Body Shine” is the fourth album from 1979 which completes the disco journey of The Machine – less of Moroder’s touch, yet still robotic and futuristic in several themes. One of the most secretive was “Space Warrior” which sounds much like Moroder’s “Battlestar Gallactica” project with more of a live band addition with wining guitars and acoustic accompaniment.

I have taken the album version of “Space Warrior” and created a new ReStructure Mix – playing with loops of the driving bass sequencer and more added effects.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/30/13) “Time Of Your Life” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stephanie Mills

ReStructure Mix Update (9/30/13) “Time Of Your Life” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stephanie Mills

Stephanie Mills is a soul/funk and disco voice who brought power to the end of the 70s with hits like “You Can Get Over”, “Put Your Body In It” and the early 80’s with Sweet Sensation” and “Never Knew Love Like This Before”. It seemed as through a love affair with Stephanie’s unique vocal and positive themes had only begun. Stephanie’s album (her tenth release) from 1985 contained more of Stephanie’s magnetism on the dance floor with the electro-dance tracks “Stand Back” and “Time Of Your Life”.

I have taken the 12” single of “Time Of Your Life” using the vocal, instrumental and acapella to create a new ReStructure Mix which is lengthier and has a few drop spots to feel Stephanie message which outlines the excitement of making life special by celebrating with an uplifted mind and attitude.

“Time Of Your Life” was produced by Richard Rudolph who co-wrote Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You” and also produced Teena Marie’s “Lady T” album.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Nick and Lindsay in response to their request for this hidden 80s dance piece from Ms. Mills.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/29/13) “Charmed By You”- Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Caress

ReStructure Mix Update (9/29/13) “Charmed By You”- Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Caress

Caress is a studio project from Boris Midney – a composer, producer, musician who brought a new techno, space-age, and ambient sound to disco in the late 80s. Borrowing the smooth strings of Euro-disco and the Philly-edge he created a new style of dance music which fascinated dancers and listeners.

His album “Caress” from 1979 followed by his USA European Connection projects, Beautiful Bend and Masquerade - where he doused once again some new elements to add to this audible masterpiece of sound. His sound can be described as an ambient orchestra of keyboards and strings along with the Afro-Cuban percussion moving the rhythm along.

I have taken the track “Charmed By You” – which is one of my favorites of Midney’s many loved pieces and created a new ReStructure Mix. Adding breaks using his rhythmic sections and groovy vocal tracks which became his staple on much of his 80s work.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/28/13) “Falling In Love Again” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The Three Degrees

ReStructure Mix Update (9/28/13) “Falling In Love Again” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The Three Degrees

The Three Degrees paint a lovely picture each time these ladies harmonize – it is sweet and memorable each time they light up a disco anthem. One such track from their album “New Dimension” from 1979 is “Falling In Love Again” – it seems that this song is least anthem-like of the original medley including “Givin’ Up, Givin’ In” and “Looking For Love” but I have taken the track from the medley (from the Disconet medley not the album) and have given it a new ReStructure Mix to give it a new stamp to lift it to new heights.

This new ReStructure Mix adds a new instrumental ending for those who want to add themselves to the ladies line up in harmony or just sway to the lovely melody. The production from Giorgio Moroder contains his jittery and phased keyboards along with the ladies serenading a great moment for the heart – a true disco feel.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Nick and Lindsay – my “Two Degrees” of disco heaven – thanks for the request and for always being so kind and loving the ladies of disco!

“Shanghaied” by ‘Lectric Funk – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Shanghaied” by ‘Lectric Funk – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

‘Lectric Funk is a band produced by John Ferrara (Average Disco Band, Ferrara, Lysa Lynn) and written for David Blech and Isaac Blech for a  the 1976 comedy “The Gas Pump Girls”. The single “Shanghaied” is a big disco classic which has the riveting power of a wall of synthesizers and the mystic of orient adventure film. It is one of the most recognizable tracks from the time and a favorite among high energy and disco fans.

I have taken the 1986 martial arts comedy “Big Trouble In Little China” starring Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. Although the film deals with a fantasy regarding Chinese-black magic and very little with an actual “dragon lady” the fierce synthesizers paint an audible sound for the action and adventure.

“Computer World” by Kraftwerk – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Computer World” by Kraftwerk – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Kraftwerk is one of the innovative electronic bands in history which created a sound which is iconic for a generation of dance music and sounds. What began as an alternative and experimental rock-edged project in the early 1970s lead to mechanical mainframe of techno-electro vibe music which even today feels like a freshly booted hard drive.

“Computer World” is the album which marks a great memory in my mind when the dance floors took the sound into their minds and feet to celebrate a sound which was a new factor in dance and fantasy. I have taken the title track from the 1981 album “Computer World” and blended it with the 1995 film “Hackers” starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie – blending pieces of the computer adventure fantasy to synchronize a trip into a bass thumping electronic track – what in my opinion is one of the greatest moments in electro-vibe dance music.

“Up Jumped The Devil” by John Davis Monster Orchestra – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Up Jumped The Devil” by John Davis Monster Orchestra – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

John David and The Monster Orchestra put the funk in disco music without taking the chic sound away. The magic of Mr. John Davis is best as outlining the disco era in a progressive pop mode. With tracks like “Ain’t That Enough For You” and “Love Magic” very little is left to imagine about disco music. His 1977 project titled “Up Jumped The Devil” is one of the dance experiences that brings the horns and funky guitars home.

I have taken the 12” version of “Up Jumped The Devil” and created a Disco Video Mix along with the 1973 horror/psychological drama, “The Exorcist” starring Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller and Linda Blair. A playful clip of the graphic scenes of the possession of a young girl by the devil who just can’t stay down.

“Striptease” by Cerrone by Bob Sinclair – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

“Striptease” by Cerrone by Bob Sinclair – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Cerrone was taken in the talented hands of Mr. Bob Sinclair in 2001 for a project titled “Cerrone by Bob Sinclair” where he translated Cerrone’s classic work into techno, house and high energy mixes. One track which stood out was a new piece titled “Striptease”. It is a technical masterpiece using a fragment of music and filtering and editing it into a pleasurable dance and audible experience.

I have taken the CD version of “Striptease” and blended it into a Disco Video Mix with the 1964 film “Naughty Dallas” – a story of a small town girl who arrives in the big city destined to be a famous stripper. It plays out in the campy color and routines of the strip play of the time. It is outline for the sounds for these techno stomping bump and grinds.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/24/13) “Feel My Love Tonight” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stacy Lattisaw

ReStructure Mix Update (9/24/13) “Feel My Love Tonight” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stacy Lattisaw

Stacy Lattisaw hit the disco scenes in 1979 with her album “Young and In Love” – produced by Van McCoy. It was her 1980 album “Let Me Be Your Angel” which brought her big success both on radio and in clubs with tracks like, “Dynamite”, “Jump To The Beat” and the title ballad. “With You” was released in 1981 and produced by Naratha Michael Walden was another rbig club favorite with “Feel My Love Tonight”.

I have taken the 12”/album version of “Feel My Love Tonight” and created a new ReStrcuture Mix adding a bit more fantasy and layering a well known “love feel” by the Queen of Disco. This mix centers on the funky beats and adds more to the mix with length and some looping.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/23/13) “Think It Over” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Cissy Houston

ReStructure Mix Update (9/23/13) “Think It Over” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Cissy Houston

Cissy Houston has brought some of the big numbers from the disco era – “Think It Over” opened the disco stage and “You’re The Fire” closed the disco era in the early 80s with another lovely Michael Zager production and Cissy’s soulful sound.

I have taken the original 12” version of Cissy’s “Think It Over” and have given it a new ReStructure Mix – taking the drum roll into to create a new drum foundation riff and work it through the definitive track which forces an uneasy lover to actually take responsibility for their action. It is a great classic and is offered her in an alternative version.

ReStructure Mix Update (9/21/13) “Love and Devotion” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Michael Bow

ReStructure Mix Update (9/21/13) “Love and Devotion” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Michael Bow

Michael Bow is a high energy artist from the mid-80s who followed the Bobby O’ troupe of percussion driven dance music which left most dancers drenched and begging for more. The productions by Fonny De Wulf (Rofo, Samantha Gilles, Charity, Bianca) are the 80s electronic period with all of its fantastic energy and along with Michael’s powerful voice it is a classic sound.

I have taken Michael’s 1987 track “Love and Devotion” (the original 12” version and the instrumental) and created a ReStructure Mix with some new parts and edits to make the song another chapter to look back and realize how it was, we never stopped dancing!
