ReStructure Mix Update (12/31/17) "Burnin’ With Fire” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Tapps

Tapps is a high energy group started by club DJ, Allan Coleho – using his experience to help create a new style of dance music for the 80s and continuing the disco feel. “My Forbidden Lover” from 1983 is their first single that along with songs like “Your Love” by Lime helped to pave a new road for clubs who desired more of the rolling disco bass and more percussion than ever. “Burnin’ With Fire” is their second 12” release from the same year and features Candy Berthiaume on lead vocals. Her voice creates the same mode as Barbara Doust on their first single but more of a haunting refrain. It plays out with a sparkling energy that is fast and furious and has always been one of the high energy babies that I always admired from this band.

I have taken the 12” version of “Burnin’ With Fire” and remapped the sensation with more of the original pumping energy assisted with a sample from a rock classic by AC/DC to give the underground feel a layer more. The arrangement is a bit more spread out and gives more time to get lost in the arpeggios which flow like a “hurricane”.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/25/17) "Just Can’t Get Enough” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode is an electronic band from 1980 which took on a whole sound and meaning as a rare to be expected from such a band. Depeche Mode created a moody and sometimes dreary social outline which feel under the nu-wave (prior punk without electronics) could become celebrated tracks. “Just Can’t Get Enough” is one of their finest with the keyboard sounds of Vince Clarke echoing up and down and throughout this simple love song. From a period where dance music was in search of new direction this formula was igniting excitement which continued throughout the 80s, 90s, and onto the millennium.

I have taken the alum version of “Just Can’t Get Enough” and rewired the circuits for this ReStructure Mix for another shot at this racing heart full of emotion. The keyboards are unmistakable as always however I attempted to make a few new marks with them in various locations to give the classic another feel with that disco confetti feeling.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/21/17) "Rub-A-Dub” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Passport

Passport is a jazz ensemble by Klaus Doldinger in 1971. The group uses a jazz fusion along with pop elements to plant a venture into a sometime rock-edged feel. Their 1980 album “Oceanliner” featured a single titled “Rub-A-Dub” which caught my attention with its energetic kick track and playful riffs that blend out of their unique style. This one always used during tea dances at the right time had the dance floor jumping in the air. It was a nice piece that never did any dance charting but is nice to hear as an underground choice and now remix.

I have taken the original 12” version and reworked this piece into an extended ReStructure Mix which strips away much of the instrumentation to make way for the foundation of electronic and percussive effects which rock out in a jazz sense as well as give this a nice instrumental for those all-nighters who want to be awaken again when the sun comes up again.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/20/17) "Let’s Hear It For The Boy” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Deniece Williams

Deniece Williams is a voice that resonates throughout the 70s. Her 1976 hit “Free” is the soul that moves the heart and is one of those vocal performances which haunts every sense of our heart and being. Deniece continued throughout the mid-70s with her voice framing many ballads appropriately and then during the big disco years she took a turn into the fire. Her voice made her 1979 disco track “I’ve Got The Next Dance” a roaring classic. In 1984 the soundtrack to the film “Footloose” featured Deniece’s “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” as an outline to the films aura and now classic 80s dance. Produced by George Duke the song presents a moment for the hero of the film to take a bow.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental and used pieces and parts to recreate this anthem into a ReStructure Mix. The original John “Jellybean” Benitez trip is classic enough so this remix is an homage to his genius and another time to get lost in this uplifting number.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/19/17) "Roller Skatin’ Mate” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Peaches and Herb

Peaches and Herb are duo who began recording in 1967 and in 1978 had one of the big disco hits of the year with “Shake Your Groove Thing” – produced by Freddie Perren. The album “2 Hot!” also contained one of that years’ biggest ballads, “Reunited” which is still an old school favorite. Their follow up album titled “Twice The Fire” in 1979 followed a similar edge in dance tracks as “Roller Skatin’ Mate” was a dead ringer – melody wise for “Shake Your Groove Thing” – however the identity crisis is was great to hear from this duo again and play their upbeat dancing thang. The New York disco roller skatin’ trend which continued to keep disco music in the limelight is the focus here along with Perren’s production.

I have taken the 12” version of “Roller Skatin’ Mate” and played with the percussion break and reworked a new ReStructure Mix dividing up the verses and choruses into a new celebratory moment. It is one of the tracks from disco music’s biggest duos so keeping them here is what was rolling by.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/11/17) "You Are In My System” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Robert Palmer

Robert Palmer is an artist and performer who delivered a unique brand of pop-rock to music history. Tracks like “Johnny and Mary” and “Addicted To Love” are the pieces that will always bring his masterful sound to mind and his movement throughout the end of his career till his death in 2003. “You Are In My System” is one of the surprises of Palmer’s career from 1983 – where the original by a band titled The System recorded it originally a year prior yet Palmer made it his own. This was a turn to electronic funk in the 80s for this talented man. His version of “You Are In My System” is haunting and one of the street kicking beat tracks of the period. A classic in his vocal career and also one of the most memorable times in dance music.

I have taken the 12” version of “You Are In My System” and recreated a reprogrammed and edited ReStructure Mix which plays with the original concept. I have stripped down some of the effects which give the song its computerized vibe and added some new beat tracks to separate and give the new version a twist.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/9/17) "Bad Luck” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes set the Philly-sound on fire in the early 70s. One of the first signs of disco music in its exquisite form from producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff who brought soul music a new edge. “Bad Luck” is one of the Philly classics that best outline the power of soulful vocals and the smooth orchestrations of the 70s with funky band players. This track features Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals and The Blue Notes following his incredible lead. A rousing experience from an early period and indication that music was heading in a new direction.

I have taken the album version of “Bad Luck” and re-edited and reworked parts of the classic for a ReStructure Mix with all of the looping and fast-phasing to make this one a whole new play. It uses the piano riffs which soon became the house music of the 80s to pull move rhythm and moves from this dance event.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/8/17) "Sky Diver” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Ben Richardson

Ben Richardson is an Italo-disco project from producers Drogueria Di Druggio and Quelli Del Castello – who also brought us Tantra (“Hills Of Kat Mandu”) and Martina (“Central Park”) in 1979 and the early 80s. “Sky Diver” is the single which was also released under the name of Neon as the band in 1981. This nice rolling number has several qualities which make it palatable for those who love hardcore Italo-disco or the sound that is now classic disco from the band Tantra. The percussion and guitars are very similar as well as the rolling sequencers which accentuate this little gem. The vocal has a 70s pop sound yet flows very well with the soaring Italo-disco arrangement. One of those pieces that always satisfies and thanks to Di Druggio and Del Castello you know you are in good hands.

I have taken the original 12” versions of both vocal and instrumental and recreated this adventurous love song in a new ReStructure Mix. A small sample of Tantra’s classic is placed to remind you of that rolling story telling in disco beats that tracks like these create. The levels percussion, bass and keyboards break down into a smooth segue for a beautiful adventure. It is Italo-disco at its finest.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/6/17) "Jump To The Beat” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Stacy Lattisaw

Stacy Lattisaw is a voice you cannot leave out when you remember the 80s and the move to a funky edge in dance music. Her album “Let Me Be Your Angel” from 1980 is one of the introductory moves into an electronic funk arrangement from producer Narada Michael Walden – who had a big disco hit with “I Don’t Want Nobody Else to Dance With You” in 1978. His production in Stacy’s project is the slick sound of the dance floor of the early 80s with the percussion and dedication of disco music. “Jump To The Beat” is the second single from the album and leads the front with an enticing and youthful vocal of Ms. Lattisaw. It was a big dance floor hit for me and has been covered a few times by other artists.

I have taken the album version of “Jump To The Beat” and created a ReStructure Mix which is a continuum of the party. A few areas are touched up with samples from a classic by House of Pain – in the same theme but different time. This one was requested by my brother in-law Vidal Sisneros and it is dedicated to him.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/6/17) "(Keep Feeling) Fascination” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Human League

Human League was there when a new take on synthesized music was desired. Their interpretation of dance music helped to create a synth-pop frenzy on dance floors with their blend of a light new wave edge and a mid-range disco beat. It was an exciting time to get lost in the wizardry of weaving keyboards and sequencers again as Giorgio Moroder created in the disco era. “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” is from their 1983 project titled “Fascination” which featured again their style infused with a new edge of soulful vocals. Philip Oakey takes this track to the level of genuine classic when his voice plays with this outline of making love exciting once again. A huge hit with both radio and club as I remember holding this one for that special moment in my program when the floor needed to be splashed with more energy during a meltdown.

I have taken the album version of “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” and recreated a maze of the sharp keyboard riffs and bass guitar licks. This ReStructure Mix gives the song a longer play and more of that dub-like edge where even the slightest ‘click’ can sound like a rolling drum.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/3/17) "Lovin’ You Is A Pleasure” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Rick James

The king of “punk-funk” is the man, Rick James. His brand of funk is the heavy bass, rockin’ guitars and his funky and irresistible delivery. “Lovin’ You Is A Pleasure” is from James’ 1979 album “Fire It Up” – which also features his big disco/funk hit “Love Gun”. The connection that Rick James made between funk and disco is a natural cause with his arrangements. His brand never left the soul arena when his ballads were present also. “Lovin’ You Is A Pleasure” is a nice dance track that incorporates all of James’ funk with light disco elements. It is a rolling and slamming love song that pulls the most out of what this talented artist has.

I have taken the album version of “Lovin’ You Is A Pleasure” and created a ReStructure Mix for a trip back down funk lane. This edit uses more of the bongos and percussion to their limit and extends the track for a more satisfying experience.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/2/17) "Rapture” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Blondie

Blondie is a band from the early 70s who took over in 1979 with their album “Parallel Lines” which featured their first disco single “Heart Of Glass”. “Rapture” is from their 1980 album “AutoAmerican” produced by Mike Chapman. This classic features a rap which is one of the first to hit airwaves from a female and in a pop track. The dreamy song is a lure for Deborah Harry’s sensual vocals and also a persona of street sense. The crossover pop tracks from Blondie always relayed the edge which the band created and works very well again in “Rapture”

I have taken the 12” remix of “Rapture” and re-funked and ReStructured a more rap based version with a surprise from the Sugarhill rap ensemble The Sequence. It is a mild rap attack and flows with the nice flow of bells and guitars.

Special thanks to YouTube user ‘User B’ for requesting a Restructure Mix of this great dance tune.

ReStructure Mix Update (12/1/17) "Get Down On It” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Kool and The Gang

Kool and The Gang began as a jazz ensemble and then becoming a funk band when their recording career began in 1970. Known for the hardcore funk of the early 70s with sings like “Hollywood Swinging” and “Jungle Boogie” which were each statement and are now classics. The transition of funk to a disco appeal was no problem with this group which took their music to a pop-dance status during the early 80s.”Get Down On It” is a formula which follows their work with legendary artist and producer Emuir Deodato who took the disco beat and worked a new brand of funk. This one is now a standard among radio and dance music enthusiast.

I have taken the 12” remix version of “Get Down On It” and directed the groove at a more dub-like and underground feel using segment and new beats in this ReStructure Mix. The transformation is completed with use of the stomping groove which Deodato works out like the disco formula keeping the funk alive.
