ReStructure Mix Update (6/2/22): “Loving You, Losing You” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Phyllis Hyman
Phyllis Hyman is a talent from the 70’s whose voice helped to stamp soul and jazz over pop music. Her music has always told a story in many ways as the master story teller always captures the listener – and indeed Phyllis did just that. “Loving You, Losing You” is from her first self-titled project from 1977 – produced by Jerry Peters (Brainstorm) and features The Sweethearts of Sigma on backing vocals. The track is a never ending crescendo of doubts and a question of the time spent being useful. It is a heart break dance number that is told in several acts and Phyllis leads this orchestral dance movement like a mother guiding a child. There is a lot of experience in Phyllis’ voice which is why she resurfaced in the 80’s with a focus on standards, ballads and blues.
I have taken the 12” version of “Loving You, Losing You” and reintroduced the dramatic flair in a whole new way. A more fade in intro and exit are used to bring us to the point of being just as confused as Ms. Hyman in her testy relationship. New drums tracks pound out each crescendo and percussion leads the rhythm.
