Rick James is the King of “Punk Funk”. His music recording career began in 1978 and brought the dance floor a unique style. “Super Freak” is a track from his 1981 project titled “Street Songs” and is one of his signature pieces with his funk edge blended into the 80’s nu-wave period. The groove on this track is one of his hard hitting guitar driven arrangements which James works fiercely. The song describes a club-goer who seems to place her odd yet intriguing persona into the night life with flair and no restrictions. This one gives James an early opportunity to make his claim into his own style as no one could.
I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “Super Freak” and entered this world in a new ReStructure Mix. More of a percussion driven baseline are the foundation of the new rhythm and keeping more dub moments added are the new dose of Rick James.
