Wardell Piper is a soul vocalist who recorded her self-titled album in 1979 with producers John H. Fitch and Rueben Cross (who wrote Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King’s “Shame”). The album had two killer-disco singles: “Super Sweet: and “Captain Boogie” – both which shared room on my packed dance floors.
“Captain Boogie” is a funky-disco track which has the power of Wardell’s pipes and a super-disco hero theme. It is one of the most invigorating disco songs of its time and a prelude to The Garage-Diva sound.
I have taken the 1975 Ralph Bakshi animated film “Coonskin” and connected the colorful characters and mod-70s scenes with the disco tracks. The film utilized live action and animation and stars Philip Thomas, Barry White and Scatman Crothers – it was a controversial release in its day and I look at it as a time piece and colorful animation more than any negative messages.
This Disco Video Mix is dedicated to the funk-tastic, Ms. Wardell Piper – thank you for your classic dance songs and for sharing your incredible talent
The film was directed by Ralph Bakshi
