ReStructure Mix Update (5/31/24):”Body Shake” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – T.C. Curtis

T.C. Curtis is William Alexander Smith – a funk/dance artist who used a groove to paint his music over and capture all in long play. “Body Shake” is his single from 1981 and is a disco track which plays out like a jam session. The keyboards are the elements here that use the most air and they begin as a tease and lead into an effective build. The early 80’s were once again an experimental scene for dance music and this one has the formula as an instrumental with a disco/funk flare. This single is an early standard for T.C. Curtis as his work continued throughout the 80’s.

I have taken the 12” version of “Body Shake” and added several beats and samples from “shake” classics to frame this ReStructure Mix. The long play on arrangement is still intact with a few new breaks.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/29/24):”I Didn't Mean To Turn You On” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Cherrelle

Cherrelle (Cheryl Ann Norton) is a soul/funk singer from the mid-80’s and her solo debut produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” is one of 1984’s big dance tracks and gave Cherrelle a definite audience. The track is a heavy beat and bass arrangement with many of the samples from the new sound clips of the period. Although the song plays out in a satirical feel it has the feel of a message with more meaning thanks to the alternate take with Jam and Lewis. This number was also covered by rock icon Robert Palmer the following year in a successful delivery and in his own style.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental versions of “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” and revisited this groove for a ReStructure Mix. Working with the dub elements and giving them new breath for breaks and segues. The new patterns are place below to reuse the groove in a new way.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/29/24):”I Can See For Miles” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Navigator

Navigator is a Euro-house project from UK producers Martyn Norris and Richard Cottle – who cover The Who’s 1967 track “I Can See For Miles”. Done with a rolling arpeggio of keyboards and thumping house base where femme fatale takes over is a nice high energy episode. The airey feel in this one makes one revert back to Eurodisco intro from groups like Voyage. The power elements in this cover are the vocal and the breakdowns which come in a moment where a breath can be taken from the previous build.

I have taken the 12”vocal and instrumental of Navigators cover of “I Can See For Miles” and readjusted the foundation with a new heavy beat for this ReStructure Mix. The new arrangement adds the best of the instrumentation and a edit on some of the chorus effects.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/27/24):”I Love Music” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The O’Jays

The O’Jays are a group originally a gospel duo and eventually became one of the leading 70’s groups with tracks like “I Love Music” from 1975. The project was produced by Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff – the team which created magic with their touch during the mid-70’s. “I Love Music” quickly became a soul iconic song and also opened the doors to the Philly Disco Sound emerging at the time. The beautiful lyrical production is and wonderful as the vocals in The O’Jays court. This piece is a landmark in music history and brings us back to being grateful for what has rolled out with history in music.

I have taken the 12” version of “I Love Music” and worked to create a new feel using the ReStructure Mix outline. I have used the original to bring back the magic and placed a few new breaks and segue into place for a new measure.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/26/24):”Man From China” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Vivabeat

Vivabeat is Alec Murphy, Chris Schendel, Consuelo de Silva, Doug Orilio, Marina Del Rey, Mick Muhlfriedel, Rob Dean and Terrance Robay – an electronic new wave dance band from 1980. Their single “Man From China” from their project titled “Party In The War Zone” is a single which stood out during its release in 1979. A segue to a rock edge with new wave fusion began a whole new era of dance music. “Man From China” was always perplexing piece for me as the hardcore sequencers and drum beats make up a new feel for its time. The vocals are a raw and raspy male vocal who announces the theme in a rock-a-billy delivery and edge. It is a great crossover dance track which leads the way before its time.

I have taken the 12” version of “Man From China” and worked the elements which stand out most for this ReStructure Mix. A new stomping foundation is added to give those sequencers a run for their money. There are also a few new breaks along the way.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/25/24):”Open Your Heart” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Ceybil Jefferies

Ceybil Jefferies is a house vocalist who had several big club hits during the early 90’s. Her delicate yet powerful performances gave the success for many house/dance sets and a few of her tracks were considered classics shortly following their release. “Open Your Heart” is from her project titled “Let The Music Take Control” from 1991 and produced by Roland Clark. This beautiful love song is one of my favorites of that year with its knock down vocal in a lovely delivery which Ceybil plays out very well. It is a true house music innovative sound that became one of the outlines for many more productions during the time period.

I have taken the 12” club version and acapella of “Open Your Heart” to mend this yearning of a message for this ReStructure Mix. Using Ceybil’s solid vocal and adding only a few more musical segments and new breaks along the way.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/24/24):”Hey! D.J.” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The World Famous Supreme Team

ReStructure Mix Update (5/24/24):”Hey! D.J.” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – The World Famous Supreme Team

The World Famous Supreme Team is Larry Price and Ronald Larkins Jr. and their track “Hey! D.J.” from 1984 is follow up from their appearance on Malcom McLaren’s “Buffalo Gals” from 1980. This set the stage for their DJ skills and their talent for rapping/rhyming. It is a salute to radio, club disc jockeys and the multicultural music which is a part of our world. The masterful piano riffs give this piece a kind of elegance that slips into a rap joint here and there. It is one of the memorable early rap songs that came from the New York scene and makes it seem quite easy with the Supreme Team and their execution.

I have taken the 12” vocal/rap and instrumental versions of “Hey! D.J.” and reworked the groove into a new operation for this ReStructure Mix. The groove is existing in more places than usual and new breaks are created from a few existing segments of this hot one.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/24/24):”Dirty Job” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Sweet Connection

Sweet Connection is Billie Joe and Sue Dixey – a project from producer Reinhard Frantz. Their high energy sound was recognized in the late 80’s by dance floors that were not done with the rolling electronic feel. “Dirty Job” is their single from 1988 and has a defiant theme of a relationship on the edge of destruction and the plea to stop its end. The fierce keyboards have a wicked sound that resonates with the ladies warning. It is one of their tracks which give us the full on underground high energy arrangement where a break becomes part of another world.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental versions of “Dirty Job” and rewired the energy again for this ReStructure Mix. The intro plays out with a fade in as mysterious as some of the original breaks and builds again for a fade out.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/23/24):” Don't Make Me Wait Too Long” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Roberta Flack featuring Donny Hathaway

Roberta Flack is a performer whom always leaves an impression in one’s mind through her music. It is a powerful gift which she has displayed over and over throughout her career. ”Don't Make Me Wait Too Long” is from her 1980 project with Donny Hathaway – who Donny can be heard as the lead vocalist on the theme from the 70’s television show “Maude”. The collaboration works like magic throughout the project and gives us songs as this. It is a beautiful and hopeful love song which plays out in every note of the meaning of love. It has always been one of my favorite dance-love songs and has always given me thanks for Roberta’s talent.

I have taken the album version of “Don't Make Me Wait Too Long” and so eagerly worked at an alternative version for this ReStructure Mix. The rhythm tracks are broken into new segments to bring this track into a new dub-like edge and still maintain its beauty.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/22/24):”Dream On” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – RAH Band

RAH Band is Barry De Souza, Liz Hewson, Ray Warleigh and Richard Hewson – a British studio group whose instrumental and fusion of various styles created a unique sound. “Dream On” is a single from their self-titled project from 1981. The emphasis of this track is a light flair of jazz meets international flare. It flows in and out of rhythmic sectors which make it quite contagious and satisfying. The keyboards break into a nice crescendo throughout the arrangement and give way to a light lounge like samba piece. It is a great example of how this band are remembered from the 80’s as being one who were overlooked for their creativity.

I have taken the 12” version of “Dream On” and used most of the percussion parts to rebuild the intro and breaks for this ReStructure Mix. Moving some of the musical movements to various areas is intended to create a whole new environment for this remix.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/22/24):”The Big Bang” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Fantasy Ten

Fantasy Ten is a disco project from producer Cay Hume along with Holly Post and Ronald David-Ohlmeier. A disco track outlining “the big bang” from 1987 is an infectious track which immolates a voice from the heavens giving a directive and scientific exploration of the birth of our galaxy and space. The eerie feel is effective and outlines a few short segments which feel like apostles are giving thanks to the cosmic beginning of time. A fantasy-like approach which works well with the heavy bass and haunting and mystical edge. This one follows the sound which was created in the late 80’s by groups like Off (“Electrical Salsa”) and Silicon Dream (“Marcello The Mastroianni”) – a nice venture into a new dance adventure.

I have taken the vocal and instrumental of “The Big Bang” and worked it into a more descriptive layout for this ReStructure Mix. The marching edge of the original is kept intact and the “bang” is heard a few times throughout this new exploration.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/21/24):”Everybody Dance” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Ta Mara and The Seen

Ta Mara and The Seen is a band compiled by Jesse Johnson (formerly of Prince’s sound Morris Day and The Time) whose sound pulls on the strings of the 80’s dance movement. Much of the instrumentation emulates that edge that Prince created in “Purple Rain” and is successful here. “Everybody Dance” is the single released in 1985 and worked its way onto playlists in clubs around the world giving Ta Mara and The Seen their time. The groove of this one has an infectious pulse as Ta Mara’s sweet yet driving vocal gives the directive of the dance floor. It is one of those unforgettable 80’s numbers thanks to the simple yet effective chorus.

I have taken the 12” version of “Everybody Dance” and moved the song into a slight skew for this ReStructure Mix. I have added a light beat and percussion to accompany the intro and worked a few new breaks and segue into this remix.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/20/24):”The Rock” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Tramaine

Tramaine Hawkins is a gospel singer whose solo career had a lasting effect in the late 80’s with several of her inspirational songs. “The Rock” is from her 1987 project titled “Freedom” – produced by Tramaine. Her previous dance floor track titled “Fall Down” was the start of this power message she delivers. “The Rock” has the same effect yet pulls together more of a groove which give the message an ethereal sound. The song was a great weapon for me during early morning sets or early in the evening when the floor was to come alive.

I have taken the 12” versions of “The Rock” and have given this faith-based number a new ReStructure Mix. The rhythm guitars and the keyboards are laid out more for an opportunity to keep this version moving. A few beats and effects from Kraftwerk are added for a new feel.

ReStructure Mix Update (5/19/24):”We Got The Love” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Lindy Layton

Lindy Layton is a vocalist who founded Beats International and appeared in in many productions also for her solo career. “We Got The Love” is her 1992 single produced by Steve Mac and also written by high energy vocalist, Tracy Ackerman of Astaire and Q-Feel. The uplifting love song is a satisfying pop-house piece which is a celebratory song and dance track. The sweetness exudes from each vibe of this production and the 60’s summer of love always comes to my mind. Lindy’s vocals play well with the track that also features Ackerman on the backing chorus.

I have taken the 12” versions of “We Got The Love” and recreated a new ReStructure Mix for this 90’s find. It plays out with more of the dub elements leading into the love verses and choruses.
