Sylvester covers Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City” in 1986 and takes the soul classic into a vibrant disco arena. Released on Megatone Records and produced by Sylvester, this mid-tempo dance track captures more of the mood of the song with touches of gospel featuring Jeanie Tracy, Tramaine Hawkins and Lynette Hawkins Stevens on backing vocals. One of the 12” singles Sylvester would release following his signing to major recording label Warner Bros. Records. A classic turned classic again with the help of our disco diva, Sylvester!

I have taken the 12” vocal and dub of “Living In The City” and revisited the piece with a new ReStructure Mix. Laying out the arrangement in a new way gives it some new flair. A few looped breaks and exit help this new remix.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/30/25):”Words” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Missing Persons

Missing Persons are Dale Bozzio, Warren Cuccurullo, Terry Bozzio, Garry Guttman, Patrick O'Hearn and Chuck Wild. “Words” is from their 1982 EP titled “Missing Persons” and was produced by Ken Scott. One of the truly new-wave / synth pop bands who helped set the stage for the 80’s crossover of a hardcore new wave vibe with dance floor. The basic meaning of “Words” is that no one is really paying attention so why bother with them. It is a hardcor rebellion done in a somewhat fun manner. Perhaps some of the meanest bass guitar riffs and of course along with Dale’s cool hiccup style delivery this one is a dance floor classic.

I have taken the EP version of “Words” which was later released as a 12” dance single and laid out the track for a new ReStructure Mix. Keeping the pace intact and only focusing on the extended play and giving the electronic parts a run for their money.

Hohokam is Andy Reilly, Dave Earl, George Kamm, Melanie Redmond, Steve Devier and Tony Edwards - a synth-pop ensemble produced by Gary Numan (“Cars”). Their 1985 single “Harlequin Tears” is one drum fest which plays out as a direct heartbreak in reverse as this one turns away from the pain and asks a simple question of heart and emotion: where is your heart? This one is one of the energy choices of the alternate sound of the mid-80s and is still a favorite of mine.

I have taken the 12” version of “Harlequin Tears” and reinvested the energy to recreate this new ReStructure Mix. New drum patterns created from the original mix are reapplied to the new arrangement and offer a new passion for keeping a heart honest.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/24/25):”Whirlpool” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Edwin Starr

Edwin Starr is a soul/disco singer who began his recording career in 1968. His voice is one that is recognizable for its power and emotion and he gives his own “soul” in each song. “Whirlpool” is a single from his 1980 project “Stronger Than You Think I Am” - produced by Edwin. The track is a teasing number of an attraction and the pulasting effect it has on emotion. Outlined as going round in circles due to the outcome of a dramatic outcome. The production is in the 70’s tradition complete with horns and an opportunity for Edwin to tell his story again with the extent of his masterful voice.

I have taken the 12” version of “Whirlpool” and devised a new version for this ReStructure Mix. Shaving off the intro titled “Get Up” and making “Whirlpool” the center of attention here. Layering gives off pieces of a new arrangement which allows a few breaks along the way.

Bobby O is Bobby Orlando - a dance music producer who began in the late 70’s and covered the 80’s with his unique style of music. “I Cry For You” is a single from his first project titled “Freedom In An Unfree World” from 1983. This mini street-opera is one of the tracks of that year which combined the hatching sound of high energy music with the drama of disco. The lead female vocal is fabulous as she croons of being left alone with perhaps a child and yet her suitor is trying to overcome his own masculine identity. The full on electronic arrangement makes worthwhile of orchestral strikes outlining this dance classic.

I have taken the original 12” version of “I Cry For You” and re-staged this melo-drama into a new ReStructure Mix. The bass sequencers are used in looping mode to create an underground feel and the exit is again . . . dramatic!

Debbie Harry is a 70’s, 80’s and 90’s icon. She created her own aura and sound which still rings out in her music today. “I Can See Clearly” is her 1993 single from her project titled “Debravation” - produced by Mr. Arthur Baker. This piece has Debbie’s iconic lulling and sensual delivery which outline an awakening from a connection which had become blurry with lies and inconsistencies. Eventually she pleads to return before the incident and plays out the heartbreak with a mystic. It is a touch of the “rave” scene in this dance version which gives sharp jabs of hardcore dance floor techno influence.

I have taken all of the 12” versions of “I Can See Clearly” and tamed the original remixes for the ReStructure Mix. I cut that deep house-like bass line in pieces and placed the essence of the song over it. A few new breaks and a new breakdown are also added.

2 Body’s are Maurice Engelen and Rembert De Smet - a duo whose music is based on the Belgium Beat period during the late 80’s. Their 1989 EP “Sexuality” is one of the hard-core underground pieces which explore the heavy beats and house influence interjected into New Beat music during this period. The first track is one that intends to work a controversial yet infectious dance number into a rolling force. There are a few riffs that make up this track and make the whispery vocals move into that left field category. It is the Belgium Beat expressed pure and simple.

I have taken the 12” version of “Sexuality” and rewired the contents for a new ReStructure Mix. There are loops which make up this new remix and a few touches of Lil Louis’ classic “French Kiss” which is featured on the EP and also Amber’s “Sexual”.

U 96 is a German techno group featuring Ingo Hauss and Hayo Panarinfo. Their compositions became very popular on dance floors during the early and mid-90’s. “Night In Motion” is from 1993 and was a popular track among hardcore and experimental dance floors. A series of catchy vocal riffs are the main attraction here along with the darting keyboards weaving a pattern that is somewhat melodic. A very deep dive into the industrial sound which emphasises the bass sequencer with a deep roar. One of the tracks that kept dance moving during weekend peak hours also.

I have taken the 12” versions of “Night In Motion” and recreated a new outline for this ReStructure Mix. The deep bass elements are fused with the light techno edge mixes creating a whole new play for this number.

Company B is a female trio featuring Leslie Livrano, Lori Ledesma and Susan Johnson - produced and conceived by Ish Leshma (Foxy). “Full Circle” is their 1987 follow-up to their huge club hit “Fascinated” from 1986. The electronic arrangement is the Miami freestyle which began formulating in the early 80’s as a result of early rap and street beat music. The emphasis here on “Full Circle” is the magic sound which Ledesha created which features the hard beats kickin’ energy along with the rolling keyboard accompaniment. This love song demands a lover to take part in the completion of a love connection and move into the next phase of romance. It is as exciting as their first big hit and moves with a sassy vocal which evokes attitude and a slight alternate edge.

I have taken the 12” versions of “Full Circle” both the standard mixes and the house remixes to align them both into one ReStructure Mix. The existing beats are treated to a shaving of their rhythm and given a new resilience which pays homage to this sound and group.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/13/25):”Twenty Questions” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Tictoc

Tictoc is a synth-pop band from Canada with John DeFino, Ray Borg, Serge Porretta and Tevan Kaplan. Their 1983 single “Twenty Questions” is from their project “Where The Picnic Was” - produced by Terry Brown. The track has an infectious electronic arrangement for caution as a heartbreak may lend to insecurity in new relationships bringing on “twenty questions”. One of the powerful synth-pop treatments of the time with some assistance in the mixdown by Chris Barbosa of Shannon (“Let The Music Play”) fame. This one stands out thanks to its slick simplicity and also the clever use of rhythm guitars and keyboard riffs.

I have taken the 12” versions of “Twenty Questions” and replayed this rolling piece into a new ReStructure Mix. I have focused more on the instrumental leaving a chorus amidst the new synth-friendly arrangement.

ReStructure Mix Update (3/12/25):”Down On The Street” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Shakatak

Shakatak is an English jazz/funk band from the early 80’s who released several great dance tracks during their creative spin. “Down On The Street” is from their 1984 project by the same name - produced by Nigel Wright. One of the uplifting songs of that period which display positive and beautifully arranged dance numbers. Plenty of those horns blaring out the celebration which are complimented by lead vocals from Jill Saward and backing vocals from Tracy Ackerman. This is a wonderful 80’s funk/dance number which always gives off a great vibe.

I have taken the 12” versions of “Down On The Street” and rejoiced with the piece again for this ReStructure Mix. Using pieces of the intro and instrumental to create a new path to dance down.
