ReStructure Mix Update (4/25/23): “Proud Mary” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Chi Chi Liah
Chi Chi Liah is a Dutch disco project from Albert Boekholt and Chris Pilgram. This is a cover of John Fogerty's "Proud Mary" - made a rock staple from the recording by Ike and Tina Turner. The street sound of the early 80's was heavily inspired by the DJs who would utilize the turntables as instruments in early rap music. The manipulation of each beat was accomplished by double beats infused and layer below simple keyboard riffs. One of the innovated and creative styles which impacted many tracks that were breakout hits such as "Buffalo Gals" by Malcolm McLaren and "Rain Forest" by Paul Hardcatle. A similar approach to Kraftwerk’s use of electric sounds and pulses.
"Proud Mary" is given a full-on electronic beat over haul and driven down a new river. The energy and use of Chi Chi's vocals are a laid back yet stimulating experience as the two are mended together. Released 1983 this was a nice addition to high energy set bringing a union of beats and the rolling bass of the 80's.
I have taken the vocal and bonus beats version of Chi Chi Liah's "Proud Mary" and worked to make a shift in the original towering remix for this ReStructure Mix. Focusing more on the flow of energy with less of the drop beats and ticking percussion. The movements of keyboards and bass are pieced closer for a more continuous and street/funk sound.
