ReStructure Mix Update (5/3/23): “Take It To The Top” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Merge
Merge is C.J. "Blood" Johnson, Debbie A., Marc Reaux, Marlon Mathis, Randy Alexander, Reg Morris and Walter Thigpen. The funk band from Chicago released their project titled “Merge” in 1982 and featured the single “Take It To The Top” produced by Carl Davis. The track was a big hit on radio stations that featured the new releases of 80’s funk and their top chart dance hits. The energy here is a non-stop barrage of vocoder chants which bring the energy up to boiling at times. The vocals are a soulful and sassy demonstration and help make this piece irresistible. This one would be one of the underground dance pieces which made it on its own merit.
I have taken the 12” version of “Take It To The Top” and re-funked the groove again for this ReStructure Mix. The outline uses more breakdowns created from the existing vocoders and rhythm tracks to give the new arrangement more space for the groove itself.
