"You're My Magician" by Lime - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"You're My Magician" by Lime - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Lime created a sound in disco music, which resonates even today as a distinctive and classic feel. There is a style in the sound that Denis and Denyse created with their talent.

In 1981 their LP titled "Your Love" released a barrage of disco classics that are now known as the obscure early 80's disco sound. "You're My Magician" was another hit from the project and also contained the sound that set Lime aside and emphasized their unique sound.

As bizarre as the song is I have paired it up with a film from 1978 starring Anthony Hopkins and Ann Margret - "Magic". The film was quite terrifying to many people - from the start after seeing the preview with glimpses of the puppet star! My partner, Ken came up with the concept and again I ran with it. It is a bit strange - but works interestingly well with the odd sound of the single.

The film is directed by Richard Attenborough

"Whisper" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Carol Jiani

"Whisper" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Carol Jiani

Ms. Carol Jiani recorded with Montreal in 1978 under Uchenna Ikejiani. Her vocal gave this Canadian disco production a wonderful freestyle and soulful edge. Later in 1981 with Denis LePage (Lime) and Joe LeGreca (Erotic Drum Band) and all-time classic was created - "Hit 'N Run Lover".

Her second LP titled "Ask Me" was also under the production of Joe La Greca along with George Cucuzella - who earlier developed Nightlife Unlimited. The project had several successes including a cover of Ecstasy, Passion and Pain's "Ask Me" - which Carol made her own with her unique vocal talent.

"Whisper" is another track from the LP which made my dance floor happy and move over-and-over. I have taken the song on to the ReStructure chopping block and have given it a few new areas to bring it back into the arena. It has Carol's dedication, as you can hear and a wonder melody and hook that will haunt your feet and mind.

"Show Me Your Love" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - D.D. Sound

"Show Me Your Love" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - D.D. Sound

Carmelo La Bionda created Cafe' along with Harry Thumann as engineer and many musicians from the Munich sessions including: Gary Uwin, Mats Bjorklund and Jurgen Koppers.

Their first single from the 1978 project was the title track "Cafe'" which is a lush and beautiful one sided disco salsa style number. The LP offered another track which I have always enjoyed playing: "Show Me Your Love" - the LP version opens quite abruptly and flows constantly. I have added a few breakdowns and extended intro on this ReStructure Mix. I also kept the funk y guitars in place and assisted them in a few areas to build on the rolling energy.

"Sultana" by Taracco - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Sultana" by Taracco - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Reinhard Tarrach produced and arranged "Sultana" - a wonderful disco instrumental piece with a very dramatic feel along with a vision for adventure and fantasy. Many of Tarrach's past projects have included artists like Luisa Fernandez and Overdrive.

"Sultana" is more of a guitar and drums piece with a flickering synth track - great for after-hours or strand up environments.

I have blended the 1955 science fiction film, "It Came From Beneath The Sea" with the adventure feel of the disco track. Sam Katzman and Charles Schneer produced this film - the special effects are wonderfully master by Ray Harryhausen - mostly model animation.

Robert Gordon directed the film

"Sadie (She Smokes)" by Joe Bataan - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Sadie (She Smokes)" by Joe Bataan - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Joe Bataan and The Mestizo Band released their LP "Rap-O-Clap-O" in 1980. A time when disco music was shifting to a funkier edge. "Sadie (She Smokes)" is one of the more successful singles from the project. It features Jocelyn Brown on lead vocals and a few familiar vocal riffs.

I have taken the 1953 film "Miss Sadie Thompson" starring Rita Hayworth - a film that was produced during the "production code" period - so the character of Sadie Thompson was looked at as lewd and filthy by censorship boards and religious groups. Today, it bears a small resemblance to any. It just proves their lack of human understanding and righteousness.

Rita Hayworth is the vehicle of the film and my focus on this Disco Video Mix - the film was directed by Curtis Bernhardt.

"Love Fever" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Munich Machine

"Love Fever" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Munich Machine

Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte lead the disco train with their classic productions from 1977 by Munich Machine - which consisted of a group of musicians from Munich, Germany who also backed artists like Donna Summer and Roberta Kelly.

Their second LP from 1978 was "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" which contained a remake of the Procal Harum rock classic from 1967 done with Moroder's classic synthesizer and keyboard feel - a kind of robotic symphony.

"Love Fever" was track which also fared well for play during this time - and my earliest recollection was the use of the synth piece for commercials and televised sports events. It is quite a pumping track.

Vocals are performed by Chris Bennett (who is pictured in the cover ad) - Chris is still performing today and also accompanied Giorgio in an LP titled "Love's In You, Love's In Me" under the name Giorgio and Chris from 1978.

I have ReStructured the piece and extended the intro with a collection of elements from the vocals and strings - it also contains a new bass-synth break that keep the moog synthesizer pumping along.

"Mar De La Tranquildad" by Azul Y Negro - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Mar De La Tranquildad" by Azul Y Negro - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Spanish duo, Azul Y Negro consisted of Carlos Vaso and Jose Antonio Alvarez.

The group had a big hit with "The Night (La Noche)" in 1982 and also a follow up "No Tengo Tiempo (Con Los Dedos De Una Mano)" in 1983. Their keyboards were the closest to 80's disco innovation for the period. It was a sound that clubs were waiting for with energy and simplicity.

"Mar de La Tranquildad" is a fantastic and moody instrumental which comes from their 1982 LP "La Edad De Los Colores" - a great example of how these musicians created a painting out of their music pieces.

I have taken the 1964 Italian Spaghetti Western film, "Fistfull Of Dollars" starring Clint Eastwood to use as the backdrop for this powerful disco track. It works well with the dirt and grit of the Western film and creates images that resonate beyond their time.

The film was directed by Sergio Leone

"This Is A Test" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Companion (Boris Midney)

Boris Midney is one of the early pioneers of disco music and with his 1981 project Companion there is a completed journey in the fusion of his genius. Although many tracks from the LP outline a more satisfying listening experience, like most Midney creations there are hidden grooves.

"This Is A Test" has been ReStructured to capture the deep elements that make up a rhythmic and orchestral experience in the tradition that Midney created himself. On his project Festival ("Evita") a sticker stating "Art Disco" is one of the perfect labels for such creation.

"Pick Me Up, I'll Dance" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Melba Moore

Melba Moore began her career in the late 60's - fortunately her success lead her into the disco realm in the late 70's. Her LP "Melba" from 1978 contained two big disco hits: "You Stepped Into My Life" (a cover of the Bee Gees track) and "Pick Me Up, I'll Dance" - both tracks were dance floor hits. Produced by Gene McFadden and John Whitehead.

I have ReStructured "Pick Me Up, I'll Dance" with a whole new arrangement and a few new percussion riffs added to spice up the mix a bit.

"First Time Around" by Skyy - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The funk and disco band that made the 70's feel funky all over again. Producer Randy Muller (formerly of Brass Construction) brought to life a whole new dynasty of disco music with a guitar lickin' sound and new energy.

"First Time Around" is from their first LP simply titled "Skyy" from 1979.

My partner Ken gave me the concept of "First Time Around" paired up with the 1983 film, "Risky Business" starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay - since it was Tom's "first time around" in the film - the rest was easy!

"What's On Your Mind" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Jean Carn

"What's On Your Mind" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Jean Carn

One of the last of the true Philly disco tracks in the late 70's is Jean Carn's 12" single of "Was That All It Was"/"What's On Your Mind" - the essence of emotion, love and beauty with a dance beat.

"What's On Your Mind" is the flip side that was equally a classic as "Was That All It Was" continues to be. Due to the direct vocal and beat on the mix it was more difficult to mix into a set without dropping in. This ReStructure Mix gives a new option for play.

I have taken the sweeping strings and Jean';s fabulous vocal performance and created a new arrangement with a new breaks.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Sergio F. of "Go Bang" - for keeping the beat in the club and also reminding me of this wonderful song.

"Love How You Feel" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Sharon Redd

The fabulous Sharon Redd graces the dance floor again with "Love How Your Feel" in 1983 - another New York disco classic.Produced by Eric Matthew (Gary's Gang) and once again in sensual energy that Redd delivers so well.

Sharon's earlier hits "Can You Handle It", "Beat The Street" and "In The Name Of Love" are complete dance floor masterpieces and in this track you can hear a lose display of funk and disco unleashed for a sparing mix.

I have taken the track and extended some elements and embellished a few segments of the naughty lyrics. A play land for disco moves and pleasure.

"It Looks Like Love" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Goody Goody

From Vince and Denise Montana comes the LP "Goody Goody" in 1978. One of Montana's most loved productions - featuring the track "#1 Dee Jay".

I have taken "It Looks Like Love" onto the ReStructure Mix chopping block to give it a new arrangement and feeling. The bass line does resemble Chic's "Dance, Dance, Dance" but there are enough new and vibrant elements to carry the song well.

"The Greatest Show On Earth" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Metropolis featuring The Sweethearts of Sigma

Thorir Baldursson and Tom Moulton produced one of the most phenomenal disco LPs in 1978 - "The Greatest Show On Earth" by Metropolis. The project encompassed the sweetness of the Philly femme ensemble and the Euro-disco fusion of New York disco music.

Tracks from the LP included "I Love New York", "New York Is My Kind Of Town" and "The Greatest Show On Earth" - I have taken "Greatest Show", which has always been an emotional charged favorite and given it a new arrangement and feel.

The synthesizer elements of the track are the exciting pieces yet the symphonic build and orchestral arrangements make the song a gem - add the vocals of The Sweethearts of Sigma and you get an unforgettable song.

This ReStructure Mix is just another way of looking at the track and is dedicated to Mr. Thorir Baldursson and Mr. Tom Moulton - the to "Sir's" of the disco kingdom.

"Keep On Jumpin'" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Musique

The LP that shook dance floors everywhere in 1978 was "Keep On Jumpin'" by Musique! A Patrick Adams production that still brings goosebumps to disco connoisseurs. It is a gem of a recording.

"Keep On Jumpin'" is a track that I recall shortly after Chic's "Dance, Dance, Dance" exploded and I would mix them up - similar bass lines and energy. Although Musique's "Keep On Jumpin'" is more like a cheerleader meet with an energy drink involved.

I have ReStructured the hit with a whole new outline and some new beats, effects and strategies. It made me a little nervous to touch this one - but once I did it was exciting and once again I could not keep my butt still in my chair.

WHAT A TRACK!

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to the master, Mr. Patrick Adams - thank you Patrick, for so much!

"I Just Keep Thinking About You Baby" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Tata Vega

"I Just Keep Thinking About You Baby" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Tata Vega

Big disco songs have certain elements: a good rhythm track, catchy keyboard riffs, nice groove and memorable vocal - "I Just Keep Thinking About You Baby" is a monument in these tributes.

Tata Vega sings her heart out out in this Motown disco classic - and yes the Motown disco sound did exist. With tracks like this there is proof.

I have ReStructured the track in hopes of bringing the excitement not only of the song but of love once again - in it's caress and endearing thoughts which Tata sings here with more emotion and energy. Adding a few new breaks and resources to dress up the original 12" mix.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Paul C. of New York - thanks Paul :)

ReStructure Mix Update - 5/11/10- "In New York" - ReStructure Mix by Glenn Rivera - Passion

"In New York" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Passion

Ray Martinez was perhaps the greatest conductors of the disco orchestra. His many productions included projects by Foxy, his own band Amant, Celi Bee and Sassy. O course his most memorable being the now disco classic "If There's Love" recorded in 1978 under Amant.

His project Passion on Prelude Records from 1980 was a wonderful wrap of the disco era with his signature string sections, heavy percussion and funky guitars. "In New York" is a track that followed closely behind his storybook compositions that blended from break to break.

I have taken "In New York" and extracted the heavy guitar breaks and lead in chorus riffs leaving behind only the gorgeous string breaks and percussion accentuated by new beat tracks.

"Galaxy" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - WAR

WAR is a Southern California band who moved tightly on during the "disco fever" with a now classic-old school track called "Galaxy". This one unleashes a percussion and bass combo that has always taken over dance floor.Staying close to their Latin rhythms and laid back groove this track is an example of how disco music was able to transform bands without them even knowing it.

I have ReStructured the song with a whole new feel and arrangement using elements from the 12" remix and the original album version. Keeping the focus on the groove and of course the great escape to "the galaxy"!

"Heaven Above Me" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Frankie Valli

A voice that is recognized from the first note - Mr. Frankie Valli. Taking his talent onto the disco floor once again with producer Bob Gaudio and the help of Mr. Bob Esty on "Heaven Above Me".

A hardcore dance piece with more of an early morning feel - very beautiful and lilting. My ReStructure Mix only extends the intro adding a few new drum tracks, effects and a dramatic crescendo - right at the opening.

A classic disco mood with the man himself.

"Laser" by Laser – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Laser" by Laser – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Electronic disco projects fueled by the imagination of artists and producers like Giorgio Moroder were the inspiration and the path of disco music in the early 80's. Artists like Patrick Cowley also assisted in this motion.

Laser is a German produced album by Wolfgang Hermes and as close to the perfection and adventure that disco electronica was to deliver. With the theme of galactic adventure and deep mystique.

I have taken the track "Laser" (which is an adventure in itself) and blended it with the 1966 science fiction film, "Fantastic Voyage" – which I can remember seeing on the big screen at the age of 5 during it's release. The film is about a diplomat who after being nearly assassinated is apart of experiment to shrink a submarine and it's crew down to be injected in his blood stream in attempt to save his life by
internal procedures.

The adventure works well together and many of the images are very imaginative.

The film was directed by Richard Fleischer and stars Stephen Boyd, Rachel
Welch, Edmond O' Brien, Donald Pleasence and Arthur O' Connell

"Chase" by Giorgio - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Chase" by Giorgio - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1978 Giorgio Moroder created the icon instrumental movement of his career - "Chase" - from the soundtrack of the film "Midnight Express".

This electronic masterpiece is one of Moroder's best known by ear since it's reverberation and sequencer timing is almost haunting. It is also one of the years most celebrated 12 Inch singles that repeat the orchestral sound of its melody and climax over and over.

The theme was always haunting to me, which moved me to match the piece up with the 1922 horror film, "Nosferatu" - with enough images to haunt any night. The German film is based on the Bram Stoker legend of Dracula. Covering the part of The Count is Max Schreck.

A pairing that should bring the effect of shivers and images that will be placed inside your eyelids before bedtime.

The film was directed by F.W. Murau

"Jungle Boogie" by Kool and The Gang - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Jungle Boogie" by Kool and The Gang - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

From the 1973 LP "Wild And Peaceful" by Kool and The Gang comes the soul track, "Jungle Boogie". A funky excursion into a wild safari with funky guitar riffs and chants on the beat. This one was a biggie for the formulation of soulful elements and a groove.

This track is considered an old-school classic and continues to make retro dance floors catch the funk with a hand full of soul.

I have taken scenes from the 1967 Walt Disney film, "Jungle Book" into the Disco Mix arena and blended the two to create a light farce of dancing monkeys, cool tigers and our hero, Mowgli.

"Buenos Aires" by Festival - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

"Buenos Aires" by Festival - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The big disco version of the Broadway recording and musical of "Evita" by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - properly executed in his own Euro-disco style by Boris Midney (USA European Connection, Beautiful Bend, Caress, Masquerade, Companion, Double Discovery).

Midney applied his jazz and classical touch to disco music to many of his projects and also infusing a touch of keyboard and effects technology creating a whole new emphasis on hearing and dancing to disco music.

His studio production of Festival is a new and exciting way of hearing the fantastic soundtrack to "Evita" - a whole new concept with his flair and growth in disco music.

I have taken the 1996 film footage of "Evita" starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas to complete this new form of music and images. It outlines the pieces of film that outline the excitement and drama in the story.

The film was directed by Alan Parker
