ReStructure Mix Update (10/31/19) “Malagueña” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Pico

Pico is a disco project from producer Mort Garson and on the classic disco label West End Records from 1979. This disco-fied take on the Mexican classic is an underground feel with the mix by Studio 54 DJ Manny Slali. A nice and clever arrangement with the Latin sound intact with much of Garson’s electronic vibe accompanying the glide along. Many may remember Mort Garson’s “Disco UFO” from 1978 by Captain D.J. where he placed his heavy sequencers to the test along with a funky rap – this is a further journey onto the disco dance floors for his talent.

I have taken the 12” version of “Malagueña” and recreated a ReStructure Mix for the flamenco dancer in us all. It plays out with a touch of the version by Western Horizon for a real dive into the Latin edge.

From the 1964 Disneyland Records special effects album “Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of The Haunted House” comes a collection of scary sound effects that many from the 60s and 70s may remember hearing while trick or treating in their neighborhood or at a Halloween party. I have taken scenes from various suspense, horror or thriller movies to bring this playlist to life. It was a big part of my interest in sound and cinema were the imagination this record inspired.

REISSUE: “Oba Oba Macumba” by The Vamps - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Vamps are a band from Brazil produced by Juan Gentilni, Paulo Rocco and Sam Malnatti. Their only album titled “Disco Blood” from 1978 is somewhat of a disco-camp classic. The theme of vampires and disco play out on the seven tracks and give a funky edge to those bloodsuckers. Influenced by early Euro-disco with the strings and Afro-Cuban percussion keeping the rhythm infectious and dangerous.

I have taken the campiest track, “Oba Oba Macumba” and created an outrageous Disco Video Mix using the 1973 Blaxploitation horror film, “Scream Blacula Scream” starring William H. Marshall and Pam Grier. As the story goes in our terrifying disco number a meet and greet becomes a night of terror on the dance floor for our beautiful victim.

REISSUE:“R.O.E.” by Scarecrow – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

New Beat dance music was generated in Belgium and became apart of the late 80’s dance genre. Many producers with electronic knowledge and wizardry began creating dance music with a darker and ambient feel.

Scarecrow was a project produced by Talla 2XLC who had his hands in many New Beat projects including many remixes. His masterful sound was an industrial werk with ominous and underground sound.

I have taken the terrifying 1979 film, “The Amityville Horror” with James Brolin, Margot Kidder and Rod Steiger to create a small treat for Halloween 2008. The dark side of Disco Video Mix with a left-field track.

"R.O.E." was released in 1989 and was the B-side to Scarecrow's "Black Door"

REISSUE: "Something Scary" by Zsa Zsa LaBoum - Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1981 a film based on accounts from Carla Moran's experiences with an unknown source is "The Entity". The film was a good depiction of the possibilities of a negative energy crossing the parallel of human life. It was a very spooky outline and based on actual events.

Belgium New-Beat artist, Zsa Zsa LaBoum on Kaos Dance Records in 1988 -- Produced by S.M. - this track is a strange one, but not too distant if you had any knowledge of the new beat dance movement in the late 80's. Most tracks outlined intense synthesizers, weird subjects and play on words. I personally found it very interesting and innovative. From New Beat came Techno and Rave music.

"Something Scary" is an eerie tune -- enough to give you goose bumps. The samples from "The Entity" -- using Barbara Hershey's voice, "I was alone in my room...Something grabbed me, and smothered me." This always remained in my mind from the first time hearing it back in 1988 to someday create the outline for a video using excerpts -- here it is. You will hear the word "acid" repeated constantly throughout -- this influenced by the Acid House style of music, which is the predecessor of New Beat.

A bit on the dark-side it works the realm of the sound of New Beat in a mysterious way. Once again, the transition of dance from disco to where it is today encompasses many genres of dance music -- this is one of them.

REISSUE: “Watch Out For The Boogie Man” by Trax – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

This song comes from the 1978 LP titled “Watch Out” produced by Pete Bellote and Keith Forsey – two talented producers and musicians that made a mark in the late 70’s and 80’s with their affiliation.

“Watch Out For The Boogie Man” is mixed with John Carpenter’s horror classic, “Halloween” to create a parody or terror for this Halloween season. The dance track refers to the man on the dance floor and the film as we all know, is that horrible little boy who loves masks and knives.

Jamie Lee Curtis stars in the film and makes her debut as the “scream queen” – even though the song has a lighter feel about it there is no hiding the fact that this film began a whole episode of films attempting the achieve the same effect. As well as a parody of likes that was another hit in the millennium.

REISSUE: “Disco Blood” by The Vamps – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

The Vamps released "Disco Blood" in 1977 on Building Records - a Brazilian label. The tracks were evidently influenced by European disco music and also the pop disco sound of the mid and late 70's. All with humor and great fun to create a lighter side of the things that can really "suck"! (sorry about the pun)

The project was produced by Santiago "Sam" Malnati

"Disco Blood" is brought to life here with the 1979 film, "Nocturna" - which featured a disco soundtrack with Gloria Gaynor, Vicki Sue Robinson, The Sweethearts of Sigma and Moment Of Truth. With the exception of Gloria and Vicki's tracks, which are now classics the remainder of the sound track is obviously a fast production of disco music during the rush of the record labels push to get the most product out into the market.

The film was a cheesy and campy version of Dracula's granddaughter, Nocturna (Nai Bonet) and her love affair with a mortal disco band member (Anthony Hamilton) and finally their freedom to love one another. And later boogie down with each other at the Starship Discovery discotheque.

The film also starred John Carradine and Yvonne DeCarlo - it had some funny moments with dialogue. The film still has not made the DVD market yet.

The Ring is a disco project from producer/arranger Marcus Barone. A club hit in 1979 titled “Savage Lover” brought on the LP by the same name in 1981. The electronic blend of electronic disco for a club feel offered some interesting tracks. One of my favorites is a medley which features “Theme from “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” a 60s secret agent television series and also “America” from the musical “West Side Story” from 1961.

I have blended the original media sources for this Disco Video Mix to create a fast and furious drama and dance piece that works with the down beat piano of The Ring quite well.

REISSUE: “Tequila” by Bo Boss – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Bo Boss is Paolo Minioni, Massimilano Di Carlo and Roberto Masala – a trio of Italian writers and producers who created a few very progressive dance landmarks in Italo-disco history. Their studio project Bo Boss covers The Champs oldies-favorite “Tequila” in a robotic-like approach and gives the song a whole new essence.

I have taken the 1985 comedy-adventure film “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” starring Paul Reubens and singer, E.G. Daily and pasted the famous “tequila-dance” scenes along with the new beat of the classic. It gives Pee-Wee a whole new spin on the disco version and also an opportunity to see this uproarious movie once again.

The Mike Theodore Orchestra is Michael Richard Theodore – a soul, funk and disco producer during the late mid and late 70s recreating his talent with a powerful production and style. “The Bull” is from his 1977 album “Cosmic Wind”, which stands as a classic among knowledgeable and demanding disco fans.

I have taken the “The Bull” and combined it with the 1941 film, “Blood and Sand” with Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell and Rita Hayworth. This Technicolor film is based on the Spanish novel from 1909 – the story of an illiterate peasant who rises to fame and fortune in the bullfighting arena.

REISSUE: “Black Widow Woman” by Afro-Cuban Band – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Afro-Cuban Band is a band formed by Michael Zager – their first hit was a disco cover of Abaco Dream’s “Life and Death in G&A” from 1975. Following a successful follow up project titled “SpanDisco” in 1977 the group released a finale album in 1978 titled “Rhythm Of Life”.

“Black Widow Woman” is track from “Rhythm Of Life” and was also released as a 12” disco single. The mix of Latin and disco elements along with Zager's fantastic production give this slick and dark piece a nice funky and cha-cha feel.

I have taken the 1948 MGM musical, “The Kissing Bandit” starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, Ricardo Montalban and Cyd Charisse and used some of the wonderful dance sequences as a ploy for this tale of a dark and mysterious woman. It works as the Technicolor douses the screen over and over after each kick and spin.

Magazine 60 were a French electro-synth band composed of Dominique Regiacorte and Jean-Luc Drion (Drion, Chocolat's, Discotheque). This duo created 1984’s dance track, “Don Quichotte” that became an instant club hit thanks to its catchy keyboard riffs and clever theme.

I have taken the 1972 United Artist film version of the Broadway play, “Man Of LaMancha” with Peter O’Toole, Sophia Loren and James Coco and blended the two for a strange yet somewhat connected Disco Video Mix.

The musical was suggested by the classic novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, but more directly based on Dale Wasserman's 1959 non-musical television play, I, Don Quixote, which combines a semi-fictional episode from the life of Cervantes with scenes from his novel.

REISSUE: “Dancing The Night Away" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Voggue

Voggue was originally released on Celsius Records (Canada) and produced by Denis LePage and Denyse LePage - a track that was the sound of it's time. It had the buzzing synthesizers that dominated dance floors thanks to this pair with Lime, Carol Jiani, Peter Batah, etc.

Following the phenomenal success of the single (backed with "Roller Boogie") the group suddenly became Chantal and Angela as Voggue with original studio mixers, Francois L'Herbier and Michel Daigle taking over as production team - I guess the LePage's had their hands full many many projects of the time.

The LP spawned a few other tracks that were not as successful or containing the production that "Dancing The Night Away" consisted of. No ominous LePage drums or clever percussion. Most of the project was arranged by disco legend, Ritchie Rome. But this track still gives the group it's fame.

This ReStructure Mix of "Dancing The Night Away" gives the song a new bass line and some new breaks and arrangement. A tough song to improve on - this is merely an alternative mix!

Dance that night away!

REISSUE: "Take Off" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Harlow

Disco music's transition to high-energy was a process that began in the early 80's. With projects like "Taking Off" by Harlow in 1980 - a Canadian studio group produced by Mike Alyanak and Alex Aleander a fusion of the smooth Euro-disco sound and the driving sound of the dance floor pulse. The LP was close to a latter-day Voyage or Cerrone effort.

"Take Off" became an instant dance floor track that was memorable and lasting from this period. It had the driving energy that dance floors were ready to turn their feet over and yet a beautiful arrangement and vocal track to last.

I was lucky enough to see Harlow perform at a club in Hollywood during the early 80's and experiencing this ensemble perform this song live was surprising - it was just as powerful.

My ReStructure is a homage to the track and dissects parts of the song into a whole me meaning.

The Three Degrees were Philadelphia's golden sound.

In 1979, Giorgio Moroder produced "3D" following the success of the 1978 production of "New Dimensions". This powerhouse of talent created some of the most incredible disco music ever. "Set Me Free" was a hit off of the "3D" LP and remains one of the most beautiful synth driven tracks.

I have ReStructured the track to give some new breath and arrangements to this classic Moroder/3 Degrees number.

REISSUE: "Come And Get Your Love" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Lime

REISSUE: "Come And Get Your Love" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Lime

Disco in the 80's was a breath of fresh air with bands like Lime.

A fusion of electronics and a light flavor of simple love and life are the key influence here. Their 1980 blockbuster track "Your Love" kept dance floors all over the world waiting for the Lime II project. It was a simple hit with tracks like "Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonight" and "Come And Get Your Love".

I have taken the pulsating track by Denis and Denyse and given it a new flavor and arrangement in my ReStructure style. This one makes the percussion dance and the wait for the opportunity to showcase it's own.

Dedicated to Dominique of Paris and Loulou of The Netherlands - enjoy!

REISSUE: " Hot Leather" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Passengers

REISSUE: " Hot Leather" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Passengers

In 1979 disco was shifting. A new vision was being explored and much of the creativity was being laid in the minds of the producer and artists. Celso Valli was a man who pulled much of what was happening in the mid seventies with synthesizers and arrangements together. The birth of a new sound featuring the orchestral feel of disco and a new synthetic formula. As he did with Macho, Tantra and several other ingenious productions he made Passengers a very carefully executed brain child. "Hot Leather" is the forerunner of this set - yet I researching and studying much of this work you can understand how his work is now looked at as classic and perfection. Although pop at the time of its release this is wonderful music to analyze as disco music becomes looked at more closely with time.

I have taken "Hot Leather" and extracted some of the more memorable points and worked a few more breaks into the already pulsating rhythms. A great requests from Hank in Florida - thank you, Hank! It's for you.

ReStructure Mix Update (10/28/19) “I’m Not in Love” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – George Monroe

George Monroe is a German artist produced by Theo Werdin (Hubert Kah, Scott Marlowe) with a cover of 10cc’s rock classic “I’m Not In Love”. This single from 1987 is done in a high energy fashion that is dreamy and moody – the way the original transpires. A wonderful lead vocal brings this 80’s dance track to the top as it follows closely the 10cc version with a dance rhythm added. It was one of the big hits for my club for high energy sets and remains one of my favorites for the time period.

I have taken the 12” version of George Monroe’s “I’m Not In Love” and recreated a ReStructure Mix for a new spin on this underground classic. A under beat is added which is from a Ritchie Family disco classic to give more of a light energy.

Disco Tex & His Sex-O-Lettes is Sir Monti Rock III and his outrageous rock and roll review. The project featured many familiar players: Charlie Calello, Denny Randell, Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. This album plays out like a out-of-bounds concert with a burlesque show and pop and lockers entertaining.

"Get Dancin'" is the the second track from the two sided medley and takes it's sound from the "boogie" sound of the mid-70s. As disco music has always evolved with the times this project may as well been influenced by outrageous tracks like "Disco Duck".

I have take "Get Dancin'" to give it the ReStructure Mix treatment adding a new bass guitar loop and some new beats and effects. It is extended a bit further than the original 4:08 LP version. It was quite fun to work with by trying on my patience, as the beats drop in and out of the original mix.

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to Alex from youtube.com/cohetedisco - thank you for the suggestion and "hear" you go!

REISSUE: "Winning Combination" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Donny and Marie

This cut was recommended by Will in New Jersey who also sent the album along!
It was released in 1977 and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland. The sound is definitely tailored after the early pop - disco sound. Can be connected with the sound of the Peaches & Herb disco sound a few years following. This ReStructure pounds that great piano track into an extended mix with a few effects and loops.

Thank you, Will - for the kind gesture and also for bringing this cut to my attention!

REISSUE: "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Leo Sayer

In the summer of 1976 this song became one of the funkiest and unexpected dance classics. Leo Sayer became one of the kings of pop music during this time - later recording some of the most beautiful ballads of that time. My ReStructure focuses on the great production value of this song - the backing vocals the guitars and Leo's camp-like vocals. It is an 8 minute extension on the 3 minute original track. Dance on!

REISSUE: “Heaven On The 7th Floor” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Paul Nicholas

Paul Nicholas is an English actor, singer and songwriter who released his first album on RSO Records in 1977 which featured the pop single, “Heaven On The 7th Floor”. This was a radio hit in the boogie pick during a period where disco music began to influence pop artists and producers. The track was written by Dominic Bugatti and Frank Musker (“Woman In Love” by The Three Degrees, “Ain’t No Smoke Without Fire” by Eddie Kendricks). It became a disco classic since the feel of the song followed the formula of a fun and uplifting ditty.

I have taken the short album version to recreate a ReStructure Mix with a longer intro and song new breaks. Along with some added percussion in areas which did not lack the sound – but played along with the fluent energy of the song. It is one that reminds me of FM radio Saturday night boogie music and plays well with the classic disco followers.

REISSUE: ”Play That Funky Music” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Wild Cherry

Wild Cherry consisted of Allen Wentz, Bryan Bassett, Dominic Ierace, Mark Avsec, Robert Parissi and Ronald Beitle – an American funk band from Pittsburgh, PA. Their classic funk-disco hit “Play That Funky Music” gave the boys a place which can never be de-funked. The song has maintained it edge throughout its release in 1976. The album was produced by Robert Parissi.

I have taken the album version of the track and created a ReStructure Mix which stretches out the grooves in several spots to secure the funk and also played with some of the musical fixtures which provide a groovy place for today, yesterday and tomorrow to remind us just where the funk belongs – on the disco dance floor!

ReStructure Mix Update (10/27/19) “My Man” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Cruisin’ Gang

Cruisin’ Gang is an Italo-disco project from Cruisin' Records and are one of the unique sounds of the Italo-disco period of the early 80’s. “My Man” is their single from 1983 from the project titled “Chinatown” and is one of the loveliest dance tracks set to a pumping beat. The synthetic mandolin strings are a romantic interlude and along with the dreamy vocals of Laura Fadinger, Sabrina Morroya and Ombretta Marsigli this piece is a beautiful sensation. A great early evening or after hours number it always seems to create its own ambiance.

I have taken the 12” version of “My Man” and reweaved a ReStructure Mix using the pumping beats and bass with some new arrangement and breaks. There is some percussion fills added to fade out with more of a dance legato.

Deevotion is a German studio project from Jens Lissat and Ramon Zenker. Their 1992 release is a Euro-house cover of “Up Where We Belong” – the original by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes from 1982.  The song was written and composed by Jack Nitzche and Buffy Saint Marie. This piano driven dance piece is a nice transition into a new arena where energy moves and love still flows. It is quite beautiful with vocals that touch on a light soulful feel. One of the big numbers on my playlist for the time and a song that I often refer to whenever that longing for a mellow anthem.

I have taken Deevotion’s classic dance production and placed it “where it belongs” with pieces of the 1982 film, “An Officer and A Gentleman” starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger. The drama/romance story of a love growing between an aspiring navy pilot and a small town factory worker. This dance track holds on to the sweetness of the original songs romantic melody well and delivers an appropriate narrative for this Disco Video Mix.

The Robin Hooker Band is a 1979 studio concept produced by Jeff Collins and Paul Saca - their cover of Tammy Wynette's country classic "Stand By Your Man" is a bit campy, but fun. You do not have to toss aside the feel of the original - I have blended a few pieces of it here.

The disco version was released on Salsoul Records.

Mixing the images from 1980's "Urban Cowboy" starring John Travolta and Debra Winger add to the drama and sincerity of the song. It is a fiddle away from being close enough!

The film was directed by James Bridges

REISSUE: "Lucky Tonight" by Sarah Dash - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

REISSUE: "Lucky Tonight" by Sarah Dash - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Sarah Dash began her career with LaBelle in 1971 - throughout time, her vocal talent always displayed the finest soul female notes - both power and energy. In 1978 her big disco hit, "Sinner Man" displayed Sarah well.

In 1983 Sarah paired up with disco producer, Patrick Cowley and released 2 singles on Megaton Records - "Low Down Dirty Rhythm" and "Lucky Tonight". Both tracks were successful in clubs and gave the pairing a lasting resonance with collectors and dancers.

I have taken "Lucky Tonight" a gave it an edge with the 1995 Martin Scorsese film, "Casino" starring Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone - I focused more on the Stone's character and decisions and gamble on luck she took through out the film - of course which eventually ends up with all of the chips down.

REISSUE "Think It Over" by Cissy Houston - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

REISSUE "Think It Over" by Cissy Houston - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) was a commodity in disco music during 1978 – her dance floor hit, “Think It Over” is a track that will be long remembered as one of the most powerful female defiance songs of the disco era. The best part is that is so hardcore and underground that most will never hear it, unless they have by some luck found it. In 2000 this track was covered by Jennifer Holiday, but the original with the Michael Zager production remains the best.

More of Michael Zager’s production magic of the disco era is displayed in both the orchestral arrangement and the dance mix. Executive Producer Jerry Love

I have taken a close call here by combining Adrian Lyne film “Fatal Attraction” from 1987 with Houston’s track. It is a bit heavy and to the point – but that’s what Cissy brings out in her wonderful vocal. I have attempted to keep away from the blood and gore of some scenes. Just a touch of the outline should keep any man monogamous. The film stars Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer.

A special thanks to all of you who make these videos work with your imagination and love for disco music. Keeping it alive is where it is.
