ReStructure Mix Update (6/22/23): “In Hollywood (Everybody Is A Star)” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Village People

Village People are Victor Willis, Alexander Briley, David (Scar) Hodo, Felipe Rose, Glenn Hughes and Randy Jones – the brain-child of disco producer Jacques Morali. “In Hollywood (Everybody Is A Star)” is from their first project from 1977 and is one of the tracks which helped to set these men on the main stage during the disco era. The segment from the side one medley is an outline of the dream of stardom and the worn out effect it sometimes creates. The production here is pure disco during the formulation of a pop-like edge with a club arrangement intact. Lots of strings and horns with heavy percussion guiding us into the groove.

I have taken the album version of “In Hollywood (Everybody Is A Star)” and remapped the aura of tinsel town into a new ReStructure Mix. There is a longer intro and pieces of the instrumental breaking the original vocal segments into new parts.

Silver Convention is one of disco music’s golden girl groups. The line-up for the 1976 project “Get Up And Boogie” include Linda G. Thompson, Penny McLean and Ramona Wulf. These ladies paint their lovely vocals over the chic strings and funky bass rhythms of arranger Sylvester Levay and producer Michael Kunze. “Get Up And Boogie” is a staple from the early days of disco music and creates the aura of the excitement and lure of the dance floors as they began to take notice and shape. The groove of this piece is one of the memorable sounds of the rolling bass and the swirling strings.

I have taken the 12” version of “Get Up And Boogie” and realigned the bass tracks and vocals for this ReStructure Mix. The new outline is a series of segments giving a new take on the original mix and also adds some percussion to give it more of an underground feel.

Jimmy Ross is a singer from Trinidad who became one of the early 80’s exciting Italo-disco artists and their ride from producers Luciano Ninzatti and Stefano Pulga (both are members of Kano) is a display of the full-on electronic dance sound. “Fall Into A Trance” is a love song with a juice that keeps oozing more of the magic which made the early 80’s another time for dance music to mature and grow. The lyrics beg a potential lover to give in and let go of all emotions, heart and soul – therefore “into a trance” of love. The music here is a mainstay of power which made the band Kano a forerunner for its time and lasting through time with the futuristic edge – much as Moroder created in the mid-70’s for disco music.

I have taken the 12” version of “Fall Into A Trance” and modified pieces of the drum tracks and keyboards for this ReStructure Mix. There are more of the drop outs using the vocals and pieces of the drum patterns to make his trance a new one.

ReStructure Mix Update (6/17/23): “No More Illusions” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Eraora

Eraora is an Italian disco project with David Sabiu, Marco Sabiu and Michele Centonze. “No More Illusions” is their 1987 single on Ibiza Records and has the deep beats as a house track along with an 80’s Stock Aitken Waterman build which makes it stand out. A track which became an instant hit in my club and chorus riff which still fades in and out of my memory. The vocals are a chorus of troubled voices giving the surrender to a hopeless relationship for the night as trouble ensues. The full on electronic production is a patch work of breaks and rhythm guitars. One of the last of the Italian productions which presented a veer in another direction.

I have taken the 12” version of “No More Illusions” and broke down the layers into a new ReStructure Mix for a new experience. The funky guitars are now spotlighted as well as the anthem-esque keyboard moments.

Rags and Riches is a disco project from producers Vinny DePaola and Bobby Ragona released in 1983 on Casablanca Records. This outline is the dances of the past and outlining  two of the most memorable numbers with a Latin flair. “El Watusi” originally released by Ray Barretto and the Ritchie Valens rock classic, “La Bamba” are segued in this medley with a few clever segements added to make this one sound like an instant festival. The spoken words are provided by Barbara Norris and vocals from Chaz Jones in this powerhouse medley of memories.

I have taken the EP version of “El Watusi – La Bamba” and placed the celebration into a new form for this ReStructure Mix. More of those percussion tracks are extended to create a segue into the power of each of these tracks.

ReStructure Mix Update (6/14/23): “Super Freak” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Rick James

Rick James is the King of “Punk Funk”. His music recording career began in 1978 and brought the dance floor a unique style. “Super Freak” is a track from his 1981 project titled “Street Songs” and is one of his signature pieces with his funk edge blended into the 80’s nu-wave period. The groove on this track is one of his hard hitting guitar driven arrangements which James works fiercely. The song describes a club-goer who seems to place her odd yet intriguing persona into the night life with flair and no restrictions. This one gives James an early opportunity to make his claim into his own style as no one could.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “Super Freak” and entered this world in a new ReStructure Mix. More of a percussion driven baseline are the foundation of the new rhythm and keeping more dub moments added are the new dose of Rick James.

ReStructure Mix Update (6/12/23): “Dim All The Lights” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Laura Branigan

Laura Branigan is a singer who brought the 80’s excitement with her big dance hits “Gloria” and “Solitaire”. “Dim All The Lights” is her 1995 cover of Donna Summer’s self-penned hit from 1979 and her “Bad Girls” project. Branigan gives the track her range of talent mildly yet effectively with a production by Orville Brinsley Evans which follows the late 80’s and 90’s pop-house outline. Light keyboards and a kick-house rhythm are the transformation from the disco beats of the original. The song itself is one of those which always sound anthem-like and this cover helps keep it up to par as the song deserves.

I have taken the original short version of Laura Branigan’s “Dim All The Lights” and used a light new drum track and much of the instrumental to create this new ReStructure Mix. This arrangement drops in and out of a mood that gives a moment of reprise to each segment.

V.I.S.A. is an Italian disco project from producers Angelo & Felix Piccarreda (Passengers, Nuggets) and arranged and directed by Mr. Celso Valli. The production here is once again majestic thanks to the talent of Mr. Valli and his layering of strings, horns and percussion. His work here stands out with a few familiar riffs but most sounding fresh and groovy. “She’s Heavy” is a cut from the 1979 project “San Francisco” and lends the chorus a stage to frame a woman who brings the floor energy with her presence. The soulful and tendered vocal is the magic of V.I.S.A. and unites that theory that is “disco” music is soul music with a bow tie.

I have taken the album version of “She’s Heavy” and gave this piece a new drum foundation to pounce its new energy for this ReStructure Mix. The existing percussion is placed in layers over a new arrangement and eventual ghostly fade.

Kryptonite is a disco project from Canadian producer Joe La Greca (Hydro, Kat Mandu, MTL Express and Diva) and arranged by Denis LePage (Lime). “Dancing Queen” is their single from 1982 which makes a deep bass and drum groove come to life for the dance floors using the formula which moved the early 80’s into what would become high energy dance music. This one has several nice hooks which rotate in and out of the lead vocal informing us of the moves that make the ‘queen’ in the club. It is infectious in many ways with the horns blaring into the chorus and the heavy drums pumping out the disco groove.

I have taken the 12” vocal and instrumental of “Dancing Queen” and revamped the energy again for this ReStructure Mix. The intro uses a more forceful beat to bring us into the shot and then I have utilized the drum and conga breaks for breaks and a fade.

ReStructure Mix Update (6/1/23): “Always Lookin’” – Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Lipps Inc.

Lipps Inc. is one of the disco bands who marked the era with dance music which brought the end of the 70’s to a peak and the 80’s with more possibilities. Their 1980 project “Pucker Up” is their follow up to the “Funkytown” album titled “Mouth To Mouth” and utilizes the talents of vocalist Cynthia Johnson and again the creative arrangements and concepts of producer Steve Greenberg. “Always Lookin’” is a track from the project which has the power of Cynthia’s vocals belting out how old nightclubbing habits die hard. It has a nice energy that is lifted with several riffs and a form fitting vocal performance.

I have taken the album version of “Always Lookin’” and re-administered the song a new outline for this ReStructure Mix. A pulsating bass beat and new drum track guide it along this time and the essence is stated over again with a drop out.
