ReStructure Mix Update (3/3/20) “Shake Me Up” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Cheryl Dilcher
Cheryl Dilcher is a 70’s rock singer who began her recording career in 1970 singing psychedelic rock and folk music. Her career lead into the disco era where she was picked up by the dance label Butterfly Records – headed by A.J. Cervantes. During the disco boom many artist were attempting a comeback or break out by recording a disco track was customary and some were successful. “Shake Me Up” is a production from Jim Taylor who is known for his disco album from 1979 titled “ Bernadette” and also his affiliation with THP Orchestra and Blackwell. The love song sounds like early disco music with the swirling violins and heavy percussion elements. This may have been a safe play for a track that DJs would warm up to but during the release it was lost amidst many disco albums and singles pouring out onto dance floors and disc jockeys hands. It is one that holds a few irresistible hooks from Cheryl’s vocal delivery and the work on strong bongo fills.
I have taken the 12” version of “Shake Me Up” and reworked a new ReStructure Mix with more of those bongos beating in and out of a new layer of percussion. The song has a new fade as well as more of the chorus that definitely feels like a disco riff more than it sounds.
