W. Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder were the magicians of disco music. Many of their projects including El Coco, Le Pamplemousse, Tuxedo Junction, Discognosis, and their own solo production titled Rinder and Lewis were the hardcore essence of disco music. Utilizing strings, horns, percussion and the almighty synthesizer to mesmerize dancers throughout the disco era.

Songs like "Cocomotion" I must admit I never quite figured out why I was so enthralled by their arrangements and ideas. This is the magic of disco music.

Saint Tropez was more of their adult-theme side - utilizing sexy LP covers to guide our minds into why disco music has always been sensual - with it's pulsating beat and ability to explore areas much more effectively in pop music of the time.

In my ears this is the most powerful disco gem of all time – Sylvester’s “Stars”. It outlines the club scene of the disco era in one song. “Everybody is a star…”

Written by Patrick Cowley and produced by Harvey Fuqua and Sylvester this one could not loose! A powerful thought brought this one to mind for a ReStructure and also a request from a close-friend, Michael – here in San Diego. I would never dream of touching this classic mix and sound – but when I started I began flowing with the song and hopefully brought it to life for you again.

Backing vocals were provided by Hodges, James and Smith and build under the pulsating synthesizers and bold horn and string arrangements with great demeanor.

Originally released in 1979 this track by The Immortals was produced by Canadian producers Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison who were responsible for some of disco’s greatest productions. These projects included THP Orchestra, Sticky Fingers, The Duncan Sisters, Big Smoke, Grand Tour, etc. Their touch was always musically innovative and always magical. I have taken the classic rock track produced by Mike Flicker and matched up the action from the 1978 horror film, “The Manitou” with Tony Curtis, Stella Stevens and Susan Strasberg – the motion picture was a leftover horror film from “The Exorcist” genre. The story being of a woman who grows a tumor on her neck that is actually an Indian medicine man soon to be reborn. It was quite a hoot – including the climatic ending featuring a special effects light show.

This video mix is dedicated to the sound of 70’s rock and Ann and Nancy Wilson.

It crossed my mind to use snippets of the film with Shirley McClaine, Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly and sync their fabulous dance numbers (choreographed by Bob Fosse. Well here it is! No sweat. Just lots of excitement.

The vocoder track repeating, “I am your automatic lover” was enough to leave the song embedded in your mind after hearing it echo throughout a club.

I have taken scenes from the 1981 science fiction film by Michael Crichton, “Looker” and embedded the feel of a computer generated female – made for satisfaction. The film’s plot is a bit different but when segued along with Sylvia’s “Automatic Lover” it forces you to imagine any different.

One of the most intriguing of both film and music are combined here.

Tantra created a wall of imaginary visions with their dance floor classic’s “Hills Of Kat Mandu” and “Wishbone” in 1979 – in 1982 they returned with “The Journey Continues” EP featuring “Macumba” and “A Place Called Tarot”. Now an underground classic for many disc jockeys, the sound of this track rings on in this video.

The sequel to “The Exorcist” was released in 1977 – “Exorcist II: The Heretic” was not well received by moviegoers. It even provoked director; John Boorman to pull the original print and re-create an alternative ending, which he felt, would save the film. Needless to say, the plot was too hard to follow for most audiences. They wanted to see Linda Blair’s head spin again.

I believe the film and the story were far ahead of this parallel – it is actually an effective display of what good and evil portray in the minds of some. I have taken the mystical places from the imagination of our lead characters and placed Tantra’s theme, “A Place Called Tarot” over it. It is given to take you on a ride that may not follow the film’s outline, but is entrancing just as the song is.

Anyone who can remember 1977 very well can recall that "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" was quite a provocative film. Diane Keaton did an excellent job portraying a teacher of deaf children who lives a double life by cruising bars by night.

The story is not as simple as it may sound. There is allot of character development on this woman and since it is based loosely on a true story. It can be a bit disturbing. I found the film to be well-made as well as complicated to understand without realizing that this was the outline of a woman's sexual odyssey during the 70's.

I matched up Gregg Diamond's Star Cruiser's "Danger" with some of the footage to pay homage to Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, as well as the oncoming disco scene (which is portrayed as underground in the film).

This film is not available on DVD, as of yet - however you may rent the VHS.

The story is not as simple as it may sound. There is allot of character development on this woman and since it is based loosely on a true story. It can be a bit disturbing. I found the film to be well-made as well as complicated to understand without realizing that this was the outline of a woman's sexual odyssey during the 70's.
