Delores Hall is a singer whose career began in Los Angeles and on Broadway appearing in musical revues. In 1979 she recorded her self-titles album on Capitol Records and was produced by Robert Thiele Jr. (Lonnie Liston Smith and Katey Segal) and Mark Kamins (helped launch Madonna’s career). The project included some of soul and disco top performers including John Tropea, Jimmy Maelen and Leon Pendarvis and on backing vocals including Gwen Guthrie, Luther Vandross, Gordon Grody and Krystal Davis. Delores delivers some wonderful dance numbers here including “Never Needed You Anyway” which is a soul/funk track dressed into a disco gem. The vengeful song gives her lover now on the way out the “low-down” on the situation without any kindness. It is one of the vocals that Delores pulls off the direct and non-apologetic focus to a found out ex. The album gives many disco directions in a great production and each holds its own.
I have taken the album version of “Never Needed You Anyway” and have given it a new ReStructure Mix to take this out again for a stage. I have added new accents on the drum and percussion layers and made the statement in a new arrangement.
