ReStructure Mix Update (11/27/19) “Frisco Disco” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Eastside Connection

Eastside Connection is a disco group produced by Eddie Davis and released several early projects from 1976 through 1979 and is one of the early bands creating underground disco music. “Frisco Disco” is their 1978 single which featured a colored spin-wheel vinyl. The song has a full disco arrangement along with a travel theme which moves though out the mix. A favorite among many disco audiophiles and a complete trip back to the sound of the early disco movement,

I have taken the 12” version of “Frisco Disco” and used pieces of the groove to recreate a new ReStructure Mix. There is some added percussion from a classic by AKB to give the song a new dimension.

A Grace monument written by D.C. LaRue and Jerry Corbetta

From the 1979 LP "Muse" comes "On Your Knees" - the most sadistic of all Grace Jones' recordings - but the sweetest revenge.

Produced by Tom Moulton and arranged by Thor Baldursson - this one pulls every inch of Grace onto the dance floor with power and seduction. It was a hit in the discotheques for it's time and now ReStructured to teach us all a lesson about making it right the first time.

Backing vocals are provided by Barbara Ingram, Carl Helm, Carla Benson and Evette Benton.

Amii Stewart burst onto dance floors in 1979 with her huge disco hit “Knock On Wood” – a remake of Eddie Floyd’s 1966 hit song. It was like a blast of disco energy and a formation of things to come for discotheques. Her album “Paradise Bird” from the same year contained a formula similar to the beats and powerful electronic drums and sequencers layering overhead. Produced by Barry Leng and along Amii’s sweet falsetto sound this one was once again a disco treat. “Step Into The Love Line” was always a favorite in the segued B-side of this project. It is slick and moody track played out as Amii tells her suitors that love is out of the question following a one night affair. She weights out that will play the lover. A great track that displays her voice in a beautiful way.

I have taken the album version of “Step Into The Love Line” and played out a lengthier version with some use of the pounding syn-drums and flowing mystical energy of Barry Leng’s production. This is one of those tracks I could hear for an hour and perhaps want more. A one night affair for this song also that may last forever.

The 1979 disco hit, "I've Got The Next Dance" by Deniece Williams was produced when disco music was at it's highest in dance energy. It was an exciting time.

This production by David Foster (Average White Band's "Let's Go Round Again") a multi-award winning producer, arranger and composer. It is obvious that he placed every effort in this project. And with a 12" version mixed by Mr. Jim Burgess, this track was as polished as disco music could get.

I have taken the 12" track and arranged it as if it were meant for a dance marathon for the track itself. Adding only a few more beats and some percussion to pull even more energy from the track.

Kelly Marie began her solo recording career in 1976 with "Who's That Lady With My Man" - her hit "Run To Me" came with her second LP "If I Can't Have You". Her career on the disco dance floor remained true throughout the 80s with her biggest hit, "Feels Like I'm In Love".

From the LP "Feels Like I'm In Love" comes the single "New York At Night" which made the flip side to her US single "Feels Like I'm In Love" - with a remix by Bobby DJ Guttadaro - and an added dialogue with Bobby and DJ Lance Wise. This moment on the record holds a special place: meeting Lance Wise in Los Angeles in 1984 and spinning along side him as well as dancing to his outstanding sets at The Probe. He was a very special man and his recollection of this recording was hysterical - it holds a special place in my memory,

This ReStructure Mix is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Lance Wise - a very special friend and music influence.

Maxine Nightingale hit the boogie scene in 1976 with her big hit "Right Back Where We Started From" - her recordings gave her the standing of a pop-vocalist. It was in 1979 when her title LP track "Lead Me On" made Top 100 charts.

"Hideaway" is also from this LP and is one of the fast-moving disco tracks that make the disco scene exciting and pop oriented for the time. I have take the track - which I have always played the LP version - but have given it an alternative ReStructure Mix - adding a new fading-in intro and easy to follow exit.

ReStructure Mix Update (11/26/19) “The Belle of St. Mark” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Sheila E.

Sheila Escovedo is an 80’s performer who set dance floors on fire with her massive percussion and drum talents. Best known with her affiliation with the artist, Prince and their sound which is one that lasted throughout the 80’s. “The Belle of St. Mark” is a track from her 1984 album “In The Glamorous Life” and is one of the energy peaking songs of the time. It is one which swept dance floors with layers of bongos and assorted percussion with a fascinating turn on 80’s dance music. One of my favorites from Sheila E. and another mark in the time where dance music was a celebration.

I have taken the 12” remix of “The Belle of St. Mark” and recreated a new ReStructure Mix with a long drawn out intro and fade. It is again the heavy percussion treat for those who like that Afro-Cuban sound.

Pop Cycles is an electronic disco project from producer Dominic Sciullo who transforms the 1972 pop-classic “Popcorn” by Hot Butter into an 80’s dance gem. This production emphasizes its work on the rolling synthesizers and adds a touch of galactic scenes to add to the mystic of this hypnotic number. It is executed as an Italo-disco arrangement in the early 80’s would lay out with a touch more.

I have taken the 12” version and dub of Pop Cycles cover of “Popcorn” and segments of the original to create this ReStructure Mix to keep this classic alive. It uses more looping and flash-edits to recreate a new treat.

Snob is a disco project from Philip Walter, Patrick Barbero and Philippe Renaux – formerly titled Black Sun. Their 1979 project titled “Are Women Snobs?” is one of the disco variations on the Italo-disco craze taking over in the late 70s and early 80s. “Women” is a single from the album which is known by hardcore disco connoisseurs as a slice of that disco pie. The number uses heavy synthesizers and guitar riffs in the pure disco sound and weaves a hypnotic foundation for the light and elf-like chorus singing of those ladies in the club that drive onlookers to question just where they come from. The theme alone follows the Italo-disco exploration of alternative and unique compositions. The drum tracks are the main force here and they never leave short a space where a break can benefit.

I have taken the 12” version of “Women” on the Canadian disco label P.B.I. Records and took those grooves which formulate that hardcore disco edge in a ReStructure Mix. More of the winding pieces which make this song an underground sensation. It also signifies the movement of disco music which even today continues to influence artists and dancers everywhere.

Vivian Vee is a disco chanteuse who made dance floors jump with her big hit, "Give Me A Break" from 1979 - produced by Claudio Simonetti and Giancarlo Meo (Easy Going, The Mask, Capricorn, Kasso). Vivian's third album titled "With Vivian Vee" was a nice touch for 1983 dancers - more of an electro-funk approach on most cuts and the flowing Italo-disco sound as in "Higher".

I have taken the album version of "Higher" and have given it a rework with this ReStructure Mix - taking the verses out and placing them among some loops and fun with the percussion and awesome synthesizers and sequencers. It was always a favorite early morning track for me and was great fun to remix.

Mr. Flagio is an Italo-disco project from “Fla”vio Vidulich and “Gio”rgio Bacco. This track from 1983 is one of the early Italian recordings which marked the success of this genre of dance music around the globe. The extensive use of the sequencer and keyboards are not a hint of disco music – but a statement. The productions of the early 80s became streamlining and more acceptable in the electronic form – since synth-pop had become the new arena for dance music. “Take A Chance” is a heavy piece in which a simple line: “Let’s break away, come take a chance with me…” is an obvious pick up line. Inserted between the vocoder chorus and dramatic backing vocals which are somewhat operatic is the electronic cowbell which many may recognize as a staple of Klein and MBO. Mr. Flagio released only two single and their focus is definitely the deep Italian disco edge along with the more pop-street edge in a light dosage.

I have taken the 12” of “Take A Chance” – using both the vocal and instrumental to combine both for a new ReStructure Mix experience. This one plays out with more with the synthesizer loops and chorus build which made it one of the classics of Italo-disco that it is today.

Taffy is an Italo-disco project with British vocalist Katherine Quayle as lead vocalist. The group is best known for their big 1985 hit “I Love My Radio (Midnight Radio)” which gave the colorful sound of Italian disco productions another deserved spot to influence dance music. “White and Black” is a single from Taffy released in 1982 and produced by Pellegrino and Rossi. The number seems to play out an odd sounding Harlequin type vocal that expresses a proud stance as a multi-cultural person. It is the early 80s brought to life in the creative arena when Italo-disco was being added to many charts and club playlists along with the electronic funk of the early 80s.

I have taken the Italian 12” of “White and Black” which is a remix of the original version. I have given as much of the reach for something new by taking samples of a well-known hip-hop track and reworked the experience in a whole new arrangement. It is stretched out into a longer delivery and dance experience. Much of the electronic sequencers and play are left to give the rhythm more movement and another odd layer on top of the strange performance.
