ReStructure Mix Update (11/25/19) “System” - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix – Force Legato

Force Legato is Oliver Lieb and Torsten Fenslau. Their single from 1989 is a techno piece with some wonderful variations on several remixes and releases. The focus on “System” is the hardcore techno edge which works in and out like a factory at peak hour. The light feel of the number is much like the new age influence and ambient of the 90’s.

I have taken the 12” versions of “System” from “The Remixes” edition and reworked the full techno version and funky street beat mix into a new ReStructure Mix. The hint of Amanda Lear in the original is taken to a new level with more of her classic “Follow Me” injected.

Billy Ocean became one of the 80s biggest voices following a list of great tracks that gave him a path to display not only a fantastic voice but also dues paid. His 1980 album titled “City Limits” contained a version of “American Hearts” written by Dominic Bugatti and Frank Musker – recorded the same year by Air Supply. A wonderful piece and one of my early ReStructure Mixes – where looping and many experimental faucets were being tested and implemented.

Fern Kinney is a disco artist with a big disco cover of King Floyd’s “Groove Me” from 1979 – produced by Carson Whitsett, Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephenson. The single on Henry Stone’s label T.K. Records is a classic. From the same project titled “Groove Me” is a second single titled “Together We Are Beautiful” which is an elegant sounding love song with a lilting melody and haunting vocal from Fern Kinney. This one is an early evening and after-hours must with the swirling disco strings and lovely production. A favorite of mine and one which stands alone when it comes to beautiful disco music.

I have taken the album version and used snippets of the single-like version of “Together We Are Beautiful” to create a looping and more dub-like ReStructure Mix. The beauty is still intact within the lovely strings and that sensual vocal.

Sho Nuff is Al Bell III, Bruce Means, Freddie Young, James Lewis, Lawrence Lewis and Lyn Chambers – a funk/disco band from the late 70’s throughout the mid-80’s. Their music is a definite move from the disco cream to a new brand of 80’s dance with more of a band feel. “Tonite” is from their 1980 album by the same name and is a memorable piece that is a touch of that dreamy groove with a nice underground feel. The song was recorded again by Fern Kinney under the title “Love Me Tonite” the following year which is the version that many disco audiophiles may remember most. A beautiful piece done here with a lovely arrangement and production.

I have taken the album version along with the reprise track of “Tonite” and reworked a ReStructure Mix for those who clamor for that funky mood with a love injection. I have worked more of the drums into the verse along with a few new breaks.

Phyllis Hyman was one of the most promising vocalists of the late 70's - with tracks like "Loving You, Losing You" and "You Know How To Love Me" it was obvious that this diva knew what she was doing. She may have been reached the top where she belonged but you would never know by hearing her recordings.

"Under Your Spell" was the second single from "You Know How To Love Me" and had the production magic of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas - who worked magic with Stephanie Mills.

I have taken "Under Your Spell" and extended the beautiful and lyrical outline along with a few new beat tracks and effects.

Kool and The Gang worked with pop/jazz producer Eumir Deodato in 1979 for their LP "Ladies Night - not only the title track became a hit - but the follow up the single, "Too Hot" also became a hit. The track uses a simplified jazz and pop arrangement with a fusion of disco sweetness to relay it's message.

I have taken the song and played with it's LP mix to create a morning feel and add some heavy duty dance floor elements. It was all in a thought and it meant to bring a new breath of life to the song.

EWF is a soul/funk band discovered by Maurice White in the early seventies and evolved as one of the innovative and a powerful musical presence. Their 1981 album titled “Raise” is one of the 80’s prized releases with the track “Let’s Groove” as its first single. The funk driven dance piece plays out with more of the pump and soul that disco music had moved into in the early 80’s. A big hit for EWF and also one that resonates like a party favor!

I have taken the 12” remix version of “Let’s Groove” and recreated a funk-fest for this ReStructure Mix with more of the beats and horns exclaiming the best of this number. It has a longer duration and some loop effects to bring this type of energy back.

REISSUE: “Void Vision” by Cyber People – Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Cyber People is an Italo-disco project from producer, Alessandro Zanni – who also founded Italian dance music label Memory Records along with Stefano Cundari. “Void Vision” from 1985 is an electronic instrumental which utilizes the sampling techniques of the early 80s. The track also uses a vocoder which takes over segments of the arrangement to relay a futuristic edge. It is a prime example of the changing sound of Italo-disco during the mid-and late 80s.

I have taken scenes from the 1987 science fiction action film, “RoboCop” starring Peter Weller and Nancy Allen – the story of a murdered police officer who is revived as a superhuman cyborg law enforcer. The images and scenes of this futuristic robot work with the rolling sequencers and keyboards emulating a tense yet fantastic scene.

The film was directed by Paul Verhoeven

Disco music in the late 70's became quite progressive in electronics with the help of producers like Gino Soccio who helped to create Kebekelektrik ("Magic Fly", "War Dance") and Witch Queen ("Band A Gong").

It wasn't long after this time where Soccio created his own signature sound using innovation and style. His first LP "Outline" contained the disco staple, "Dancer". Each track on the project remains a mystery and influence to many disc jockeys and disco audiophiles.

"The Visitors" is taken into a Disco Video Mix along with the 1951 sci-fi film, "The Day The Earth Stood Still" starring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal. It gives the aura of this mix moment to remind us that our planet is ill prepared to deal with being from another galaxy - until we have learned to live with ourselves.

Ellie Warren is a pop-singer from the UK whose 1985 track “Satellites” became a classic among 80s dance circles and disc jockeys. Produced by Jean Claude Alves and Marvin Howell-Kashfi who also gave us tracks from Norma Lewis, Bianca Fernandez and Jackie Rawe, It was the mid-80s dance sound where a disco beat and a rock fused them could create a new stage for every dance floor. “Satellites” is one of my favorite after-hours pieces and helped to bring many dancers back down to earth during many mix programs of the time.

I have taken scenes from the 1997 science-fiction drama “Contact” starring Jodie Foster and Mathew Mc Conaughey. Its theme which is a woman’s search for life in the galaxy brings an experience in a new dimension. The disco track as an anthem works with the images painting a similar experience outside of the dance floor and lonely nights searching for love.

This Disco Video Mix is dedicated to Mr. Marvin Howell - thank you, Marvin for the beautiful music!

MARRS is Alex Ayuli, CJ Mackintosh, Dave Dorrell, Martyn Young, Rudy Tambala and Steven Young – a onetime house/break beats production from 1987 which paved the way for many bass-beat tracks of the time. A sample-emporium of pieces from new elements focusing on the planet Mars and its need for women. An old school house classic now in the realm of a trend setter.

I have taken the theme used in the track – the 1967 low-budget sci-fi flick “Mars Needs Women” and created this Disco Video Mix to complete the funky journey of the space travelers and their lust for earth chicks. It flows close to each effect and break leaving little for need to feel nothing but the serious rhythm here.

The 1976 science fiction film, “Logan’s Run” has been a favorite among many with its credulous theme. It is the 23rd century and living in this time is like living a dream – fulfilling all of your every fantasy – but you only live until you are 30 years of age. At that time you are literally “burnt out.”

The visuals from “Logan’s Run” were quite advanced for 1976 – many will find them an elementary as some monsters movies of the 60’s compared to today. But the surrealistic technology advancement works well with the tame visuals. Directed by Michael Anderson.

Space’s “Just Blue” has been placed over these images to create the same effect that the LP did for many forerunners of new age and disco themed music. Produced by Jean-Philippe Iliesco and composed and arranged by Didier Marouani – this follow up LP to their “Deliverance” project left dancers in a futuristic arena of sound and imaginary themes. Since they were one of the first to examine this musical trip their keyboards and arrangements are hailed as some of the greatest in disco.
